Review

“Captivating... A book about continuity and roots and a sense of belonging in an age that's increasingly about mobility and self-invention. Hugely compelling” ―Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times“It's bloody marvelous.” ―Helen Macdonald, New York Times bestselling author of H IS FOR HAWK““Rebanks’s family has farmed sheep in the hills of the lake District, in northwestern England, for some six centuries. The work, detailed lovingly in this memoir, has changed little… Rebanks is concerned with the survival of the landscape, of the life that it has fostered, and of its inhabitants’ view of the world.”” ―The New Yorker“James Rebanks's unsentimental, sharply detailed memoir about his life as a shepherd in England's Lake District gripped me from the first page.” ―The Wall Street Journal"James Rebanks’s “The Shepherd’s Life” stands in blissful earthbound contrast. Farming the high fells of the Lake District, the first son of a shepherd, who was himself the first son of a shepherd, Mr. Rebanks writes with loving eloquence about a kind of deep-rooted life that is all but lost in the developed world. Herdwick sheep, the local breed, are set free to graze on unfenced commons and could head off to Scotland were they not “hefted”―tied to their home range by invisible bonds of instinct and inheritance. Mr. Rebanks is himself hefted to his land and deftly conveys the worth and beauty of such a connection." - Geraldine Brooks“A gorgeous book, unsentimental but exultant, vivid and profound, and a fierce defense of small-scale farming against the twin threats of agribusiness and tourism.” ―National Geographic“A powerful - and quietly electrifying - meditation on the gruelling truth of rural life... Rebanks' prose is beautifully sure-footed.” ―The Sunday Times (UK)“Rebanks' enthusiasm and talent for poetic writing is infectious... [His] words create not only a gorgeous landscape painting of the Lake District and its inhabitants, human, animal, bird and fish, but also a useful social document... What is most striking about this book is its authenticity; this is the real thing.” ―The Times (UK)“Beautifully written” ―Alan Cumming, New York Times Bestselling author of NOT MY FATHER'S SON“May well do for sheep what Helen Macdonald did for hawks.” ―The Guardian (UK)“Superstar Shepherd.” ―The Daily Mail (UK)“Affectionate, evocative, illuminating. A story of survival - of a flock, a landscape and a disappearing way of life. I love this book” ―Nigel Slater, author of the internationally bestselling Toast: The Story of a Boy’s Hunger and Tender“Rebanks writes about his native Lake District with a loving eye for its past and present, its working denizens--humans, dogs, sheep--who continue to shape our picture of what Pastoralism is.” ―Brad Kessler, author of Goat Song“The Shepherd's Life weaves together the human history of the farmers with factual history of the farms, the spiritual pull of the land with the physical demands it makes, the cruelty and beauty, optimism and pragmatism of the most beautiful corner of the world. A vivid, honest, unforgettably written account not just of one shepherd's year, but of an ancient way of life.” ―Lucy Dillon, author of LOST DOGS and LONELY HEARTS“THE SHEPHERD'S LIFE is a reader's delight. Rebanks lives, breathes, and works his landscape - which gives him an inside edge as sharp as shears over most of the flock of current countryside writers. He has written a marvelous autobiography - of himself, his family, and the hills themselves.” ―John Lewis-Stempel, author of MEADOWLAND and YOUNG JAMES HERRIOT: THE MAKING OF THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS VET

THE SHEPHERD’S LIFE: MODERN DISPATCHES FROM AN ANCIENT LANDSCAPE by James Rebanks is a stunning book. I couldn’t put it down (and not only because I raise sheep myself). What I do - on a tiny hobby farm in Maine, USA - is not even remotely comparable to Mr. Rebanks’ occupation and lifestyle. (We both love sheep though!)While reading, I kept pausing and thinking of all the James Herriot books I read and reread years ago. The tone and style and passion of the writing is similar - the love and respect of the land, the landscape itself, the enthusiasm and joy for daily farming and shepherding tasks - these thoughts leap out of the pages at you, embrace you and don’t let you go.Several of my students and co-workers (I, too, needed a money-paying job) used to ask me: Why did I have sheep and chickens and a big garden? Why did I have muddy shoes sometimes at school? How come pieces of hay dropped out of my hair sometimes? Why learn to spin and weave wool? Don’t I know about Wal-Mart? Isn’t that where food comes from?I tried to explain that the animals, the plants, and the work kept me grounded and in touch with the earth, the seasons, life itself. But this thought process and lifestyle is hard to explain and justify to most people - children or adults. That is why I am so pleased to have discovered this book. It will always be on my shelf and referred to often. Some of my favorite passages revolve around the attempt to justify a choice of lifestyle and profession and the attempts to resolve living and working in a revered landscape. The words that come to mind when thinking about this book are - passion (#1), love of animals, love and respect of the land, tradition, history, connectivity to surroundings, a sense of community, cooperation and compromise, reflections, mind-numbing work.I do like the short chapters and blog-style writing.I do enjoy Mr. Rebanks’ Twitter account. @herdyshepherd1He is a great photographer.I do enjoy the reflections and musings of Mr. Rebanks about land use, landscapes, love of tradition, love of family and love of sheep and farming.I do highly recommend this book.

In the modern world filled with people, smartphones and apps, James Rebanks writes about a world that has existed for thousands of years, which struggles to maintain its existence despite the encroaching urban world. How does one value a sense of place and integrate that value into a world that does not value place or the work that holds you to a place. As a teenager he, and his mates, resisted the pleas of their teachers to adapt to the demands of formal learning and leave their rural world. His teachers thought that the shepherd's work was intellectually barren and the teenage James Rebanks thought the world of books offered by his teachers was unworthy of effort. The demands of place included arguments and fights with his father in his younger life with a growing appreciation of his father as he grew older. The book is the story of his life's journey to show that shepherding demanded high order emotional, physical and intellectual effort, while coming to realize that books, too, could impart knowledge and maybe wisdom. Remember, shepherding is a pre-industrial occupation; The idea that anything that requires hard, physical labor is somehow unworthy, and maybe demeaning, isn't an idea that would have found much traction before the late 19th and 20th centuries.Mr. Rebanks' road eventually leads him to studies at Oxford. It isn't clear from the book that his professors ever understood why his road took him back to the Lake District of England and the work of shepherding. But, it did. In following his journey, I found myself enriched to see values that I don't generally find in the world of higher education with which my work brings me into contact.I thought back to the mid-1980s when I represented an agricultural lender and I was meeting with their board of directors. They were in overalls and I was in a suit. But, as I listened to them they spoke of buying expensive farm equipment the way I would speak of buying a pair of shoes and they paid close attention to the Chicago Board of Trade for the prices of farm commodities. The guy at the end of the table was in his early 40s and, as I thought about it, I realized he controlled at least $6M in assets, had a college degree and engaged in breeding dairy cattle scientifically. I realized that, despite how they were dressed and how I was dressed, I needed to give these people some respect. James Rebanks' book brought this thought.Mr. Rebanks' book challenged how I think about the value of a father, work, learning and a sense of place. I recommend it highly.

A friend recommended that I read this book, so I picked it up. I'm not usually a memoir guy and have no connection to or previous interest in the habits of shepherds or their sheep. I didn't expect to like this. But I did. A lot.I enjoyed the way Rebanks structured the narrative - following the four seasons of a Shepherds life (Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer) while weaving in a narrative of the different seasons of his own life. I have never set foot on a sheep farm, but I came to identify with world he described: the cycles of work and rest, the family blessing and family tension, the need to prove yourself... I also came to long for many aspects of his experience: the deep connection to the land (being hefted) and to the people who lived on it and worked it before you, the deep and real sense of community with (the few) others who know and have experienced your life, and the ability to watch your decisions play out over a long period of time in order to both learn and improve your skill. This is not a sentimental look at the shepherding life. It is full of joy and family - but it is also realistic in its descriptions of the landscape, the work, and the people who dwell in it. Like his farm, after you walk through this, you will look down and see that you have muck on your shoes. And if you are like me, you'll be glad you do.

Great read, I read it in two days while i was on jury duty. Willie Robertson has written a book about how hunting and American history have been intertwined since the beginning. He starts with the Indians and goes from there all the way up to modern times and the different US Presidents that have enjoyed hunting and shooting.

1. A fantastic book, a must read for anyone and everyone!!!! This book takes you through the dark times right into the light of conservation. The book has some very interesting details that I am sure everyone will find enlightening. Thank You Mr. Robertson for bringing this book to the shelves in these modern crazy times. Lord knows we need more books like these. This should be a must read for every child to read before graduation, hunter or not!!!!!!

I'll be honest here. This book started out slow and seemed to go nowhere fast. Then by chapter 3 or 4 it got a lot better and I found it very interesting and a fun read. I may have to read a biography on Teddy Roosevelt now. I agree that being in the wild wooded land is the closest and easiest way to be with the Creator.

Excellent book on how hunting has shaped America today.

This book reminded me why I love hunting to begin with. It made me remember hunting with my dad as a boy, and all of the experiences that bonded us, and helped me to develop into the person I am. Highly recommend this book for any hunter, or those who aren't hunters but are interested in the hunting lifestyle.

The book is a bit thin... It reads like a compatilation of a 13 year old's school essays on various people and events, ie, they barely scratch the surface on one before moving on to the next. For example, during a weak description of Roosevelt's hunting and shooting background they mention he signed into law Pittman-Robertson but don't further explain how this important law has affected wildlife conservation. Hello, the sub-title is how legendary hunters shaped America. The chapters are organized by subject (though as I said they hardly scratch the surface of the subjects they do cover, let alone do the authors include a fraction of the history of hunting in the United States) but in doing so there is little following of chronological order. Randomly they include a very short schpiel on Hemingway at the end of the chapter on Presidents who hunt. Also of note, the authors' use of the word "elks", as in "shot four elks" and "he shot quails", etc... is distracting. Also a few inaccuracies and some grammar mistakes which should have been caught by such a publisher. The last chapter is just quotes from other hunters, outdoor writers, or persons already discussed in the book. Really, it does not appear much planning or effort went into this. Three stars instead of two only because I can read this to my kids or give it to them to read; the authors keep it clean, it has a positive message, and is a good intro to kids before they go off to read something else on the subject with more meat.

I enjoyed the book

This title offered a good look at some of the highlights of the history of hunting in North America. Mixed in with facts and historical stories the author provides his point of view and shares personal stores that relate to the overarching theme of each chapter. By far my personal favorite is the final chapter presenting quotes from various hunters and conservationists throughout history. I will absolutely be reading this book again and suggesting it to others.

I am a great fan of Connelly's standalones, particularly (but not exclusively) The Poet. The Lincoln Lawyer, however, is his masterpiece to date. The novel begins slowly. It is not ponderous or dull; Connelly is simply setting the stage very carefully. Once set, the action is nonstop. The courtroom scenes are masterful, the characters engaging, the ending satisfying. As a sometime journalist Connelly does not utilize legal nuance the way, e.g., Steve Martini does. As a journalist, however, he has a greater sense of place and the feel of the streets and the sweat beneath a damp collar. The architectonics of the trial--the traps set and then sprung--are beautifully wrought and the overall plot arc most impressive. Don't miss this one and don't worry about setting aside the time to read it. Once you begin you won't stop and you'll end with a thirst for more. This could be the start of a new series.

I started reading the Bosch series after watching the shows on Amazon and loving them. So I started reading the Bosch series and along the way, one of the Kindle versions had a bonus book that has Mickey Haller and Bosch together. At first I thought, there's no way that Connelly can make me interested in a lawyer. I'm not a fan of any of the law shows, never have, likely never will. But something about it *no spoilers* made me like it. Let's just say Bosch and Haller are tied together.I gave the Lincoln Lawyer a shot and now I've got yet another series of books that I'll be binge reading. Thank Connelly. Now you are going to be getting even more of my cash. We weren't even married for crying out loud.

I am not a lawyer, have no interest in being one, and find most of them in the category of being bottom feeding scum suckers. This book is about one. He is a defense attorney, and there is no love lost between him and the cops. He defends the bad guys, but he also makes some serious mistakes when he defends them. He has his name plastered all over the place, his bailbondsman recommends him and he takes very few cases pro bono. His office is a Lincoln Town Car because he has no need for an actual office. He is called to defend a rich kid for committing a serious bodily injury against a prostitute. He is convinced his client is not guilty, believing that the victim is only looking for a big payoff. He has his investigator dig in and doubt starts creeping in. The client, Roulet (pronounced Roo-lay) is beginning to look like a serial killer. More and more terrible stuff is beginning to surface, but Roulet has something on him and is relentless to make certain that Haller will get a not guilty verdict. Here is where ethics, conscience, and morality become a true conflict.

I really enjoyed this legal thriller. The protagonist, Mickey Haller, is a likable rogue, skirting the edges of legal and ethical issues to do the Right Thing, when it really matters. But he's not too bothered by telling half-truths and manipulating the system when he must, or it's convenient. The story moves right along, right from the beginning, and keeps the reader immersed. It really is hard to put down; you have to see how this is going to turn out. Connelly has done a great job of making Mickey interesting in many ways--from the fact that he still is connected to both of his ex-wives, is quirky enough to have bought not one, not two, but FOUR Lincolns at one point, and struggles to make his nut every day meaning that he does what he (thinks he) has to. He's not above taking a case just for the publicity value, but also respects client confidentiality as a cardinal rule--even if the client is a dangerous sleazebag. Or is he? An interesting story well told. I just ordered the next three in the series. Hopefully they live up to this great first installment.

Maybe every time an author wants to start a new book series (based on a new central character), s/he has to come up with something to distinguish that character from all the characters that other authors have already created. Maybe that’s why The Lincoln Lawyer’s Mickey Haller character rides around in a Lincoln (and even bought four of them all at the same time). Or maybe it’s just that product placement, which has been commonplace in movies for years, is now in books as well. Regardless, it’s not really relevant to the plot and not very defining of the central character.Mickey Haller is a not-particularly-successful defense lawyer who makes most of his living from the repeat business generated by habitual offenders. So having a rich client choose Haller as his lawyer seems highly unlikely, but that’s the storyline. And with any story, other unusual/unlikely situations move the story along. The story was entertaining (and occasionally exciting). Personally, I enjoyed the courtroom scenes best. But nothing particularly stood out about the book, so it was an average read.

This book is the first in the Lincoln Lawyer series, and one of the best mysteries I've read in the past year or so. There are many excellent reviews giving some flavor of the plot. My favorite (spoiler-free) among them is the review by Tucker Andersen, located at http://www.amazon.com/review/R31O2UU7U3XEIL/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=0316734934 .I'll just add my own reactions and assessment. The writing is very good. The lawyer's life and cases had a realistic "feel". The plot pacing kept me turning pages, and there were some clever twists and turns. Several characters were well developed and they operated from motives that were consistent with their personalities. The protagonist, Mick Haller, is a defense lawyer struggling along as a cog in the great "machine" of American justice. The trial scenes were among the most convincing that I've read outside a John Grisham novel. I found the ending quite satisfying.I highly recommend "The Lincoln Lawyer" for adult mystery fans.
