Typos in some spots. Mostly just used iPhone apps to study and I did just fine. This book isn't needed to pass the NBDHE. iPhone apps are the way to go!

The information was decent to review but not completely user friendly. Many of the questions at the back of each chapter had the wrong coinciding answer in the back of the book. I feel it was a waste of money, and will never recommend future students to purchase it.

Perfect. Book in fantastic like new shape!

ok

Hi, I bought it and I didn't receive the CD Rom.

Perfecto estado

It covered what I needed to know and so much more! I purchased this book about a month into my final semester, which was about 3 months before I took the exam. By doing a section every weekend, I was able to better prepare myself and condense the loads of stuff I had learned to a more do-able amount. I believe that this book helped me a lot in passing my National Boards the first time!

This is such a great book! It is easy to read like Kaplan. Comprehensive like Mosby. And includes the best companion disc! I wish this was the first book I had purchased to study from. It is amazing. It even includes case studies throughout each chapther. Don't waste your money on anything else!

Dust, by Arthur Slade

From Booklist

Gr. 8-12. Set in Saskatchewan during its dust-bowl years, Slade's novel begins eerily as seven-year-old Matthew vanishes on his first walk into town alone. Matthew's parents and the entire community appear to accept and forget his disappearance, but a strange set of circumstances leads his 11-year-old brother, Robert, to conclude that Matthew is still alive. It seems that Matthew's disappearance, as well as the vanishing of several other area children, corresponds with the appearance of Abram Hamsich, a stranger who promises to build a rainmaking machine that will end the terrible drought. Hamsich soon has the whole town mesmerized, except for Robert (and his uncle), who gradually realizes Hamsich's horrific true plans. Calling up Ray Bradbury's 1962 classic Something Wicked This Way Comes and the legend of the immortal soulless wanderer, Slade's haunting story shows the triumph of imperfect hope over manifest evil. In the description this book is described as similar to the works of Stephen King and Ray Bradbury. I find that amalgam to be surprisingly spot on. This is an eerie fantasy/horror tale that either of the aforementioned authors might have written, complete with a magical way of weaving words to tell the story, which involves missing children, a dark stranger that casts a spell over the hapless adults, paranormal butterflies, and a rain machine. How all that adds up to this mesmerizing story is something I can't relate without spoilers. Suffice to say that you must read it. Arthur Slade is on my list of authors to read for the beauty of reading.

I'm not sure what I expected when I started reading this book but it was one creepy story. And, it stayed creepy all the way through. One summer day, seven-year Matthew disappears while walking to town. His brother Robert feels a terrible sense of guilt. After all, Robert was too busy reading to go with Matthew when his brother asked. At first, it seems as if it might be an accident but when authorities discover other children from town missing, there is clearly something sinister at work. At first, Robert's parents and the entire town are paralyzed with grief by the loss, but they slowly seem to recover and then forget all about their missing children. But, Robert doesn't forget.Newcomer Abram H. has something to do with Robert's parents' forgetting and something to do with the missing children. Robert just knows it. But, how is all this connected to Abram's promise of a rain-making machine? It had a very Stephen King/Neil Gaiman feel to it for me, although the horror was toned down a bit for the adolescent target. The story was creepy most of the way through but descended into out-right horror at the end. It's kind of like a psychological thriller, but....weird. It was a very interesting setting--takes place during a 'dust bowl' depression in Saskatchewan, Canada. I always pictured the dust bowl as an American phenomenon so that part was enlightening. I liked the book but I don't know how well adolescents would like it. It seems a long wait for the eventual pay-off.

"Do you like being young?" the man asked. Matthew didn't understand the question. He examined the stranger's smiling face. After a moment's thought he answered, "Yes.""I was never young," the man said. He tipped his hat back, showing glistening white hair. "Do you believe me? I was never young."Seven-year-old Matthew is pleased to be walking to town alone. He's busy envisioning how he will be waiting on the corner when his family finally pulls up with their horse and wagon. "See, Mom, I made it. My legs aren't too short," he'll proudly yell. He's surprised as can be to hear a strange truck pulling up behind him.Matthew never makes it to town that day. Only his hat is found. His eleven-year-old brother, Robert, is stunned. Could Matthew have been swallowed by the wind or adopted by a coyote? Sometimes he's even forced to admit, "He's not coming back. Not ever. He's probably dead, okay? Dead. Like a little sparrow that falls out of the nest."Then, a mysterious stranger arrives in town to reopen the decrepit old movie theater. He offers visions and promises that tease and tempt the townsfolk. Only Robert and his Uncle Alden seem resistant to the man's charms. "What a snake-oil trick, all smoke and mirrors," scoffs Alden.Soon, people are forgetting things...things like Matthew's disappearance. Only Robert remembers, and he is determined to find out the truth.Robert is a great character...a boy in love with books and reading (particularly forbidden titles by Robert E. Howard) and a fondness for new vocabulary words, like 'dessicated' and 'cacophony.'The sinister stranger, Abram, is another memorable creature, and his scenes with the doubting Robert are electric."You are on the cusp," Abram explained, "between boy and man, the dreaming and the reality. You must have had a million great dreams in your lifetime. Of armies and swords, candies and milkwhips, wizards and unicorns. The cusp." His lips curled into a soft, sad, smile. "I have never had a dream. Not once.I feel sorry for you. One morning you will get up and your dreams will stay in your pillow."While not exactly a horror novel, there is a terrific, creepy 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' vibe about this book. It was suspenseful, well-written, and I really enjoyed the unusual setting of Depression-era Saskatchewan for a fantasy novel.

Tension is the key to this well-written piece by Arthur Slade. Reading Dust reminded me of the high voltage power lines that passed through the back pasture of my grandparents' farm. No matter how far away I was from them, as long as I was on the farm I could hear the steady thrumming they generated. Most of the time in Dust the tension is far away, yet ever-present as a distant hum. Occasionally, you move closer to the source and the hairs on the back of your neck start to rise. Eventually, you will stand under those lines. For this reader, it is an experience well worth the wait. This is the first work by Slade I've read and I'm sure I'll be reading more in the future. He writes beautifully of the Canadian landscape and the simple people who inhabit it. The main character, a boy close to becoming a young man, is rendered in almost perfect pitch with the story and setting. He isn't better or smarter than his small rural home and its people. He is either more "in-tune" with the natural world or the unnatural. Which of these is the case, or both, isn't wholly clear, and that is my only complaint with the book. Two other characters are also aware that something is wrong with the new man who has come to town, but the resemblance, in character, between the two is almost non-existent. They each share aspects of the main character, but they are opposites in many ways. It's the only hole in an otherwise tightly knit tale. The language is beautiful, as is the way the author weaves the story of one boy into the fabric of a time and place in history that is little known, even to other Canadians. I look forward to reading more from this lyrical author.

Review

Recipient of the American Journal of Nursing 2015 Book of the Year Award in the following subcategories: Consumer Health and History and Public Policy."SAVING LIVES has a serious point, that the devaluation of nursing -- both by overlooking nurses' contributions to positive outcomes for patients, and more subtly by emphasizing their devotion, compassion and self-sacrifice over their lifesaving skills -- discourages students from the field and contributes to a critical nursing shortage." --Newsweek "An important book because it so clearly delineates how ubiquitous negative portrayals of nursing are in today's media, particularly three common stereotypes of nurses -- the 'Naughty Nurse,' the 'Angel' and the 'Battle Axe.'" --New York Times "Invoking stereotypes about nurses is easy, sloppy, and all too common. Summers and Summers challenge us to imagine a world where nursing is fully recognized, funded, and supported. Saving Lives is a media activism roadmap crucial for reaching this destination." --MarySue V. Heilemann, PhD, RN, Associate Professor, UCLA School of Nursing "Saving Lives explains in painstaking detail how our society's chronic trivialization of nursing as a profession diminishes the quality of health care for all patients, creating ripple effects with sometimes dire consequences. This book should incite a demand for a cultural shift in which nurses are valued as the indispensable and highly-trained health care professionals they are." --Claire M. Fagin, PhD, RN, Dean Emerita, Professor Emerita, University of Pennsylvania Featured in Doody's Life Sciences Book Review"A valuable resource for nursing students and professionals." -- Choice

Sandy brings to light all the injustice and abuse professional nurse endure. If you are a nurse, know a nurse, have received care from a nurse, you should read this book.

I love to share with pre-nursing students to understand how distorted the media portray our valuable profession

I enjoyed this book and an addition to my nursing material.

A little dry and, so far, retells the same information repeatedly. I haven't gotten through the whole book yet though so I can't give a thorough review. However, with as repetitive as it has been so far in the first half-dozen+ chapters, I don't know how much material they have to fill this whole book!

Savings Lives: Why the Media’s Portrayal of Nursing Puts Us All at Risk is by far the mostoverlooked and influential nursing book that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The bookshows how the media’s portrayal of nursing negatively affects not just nurses, but also patients, thehealthcare system, and public health policy. The book advocates for a cleaner, more accurate, and overall more professional depiction of nurses intoday’s media. It is able to do this through its well-written narrative and the use of case studies ofnumerous negative portrayals of nurses in the media today—especially from high-impact televisionprograms. Interspersed throughout the book are references and evidence from diverse research areasbacking up the authors’ arguments with statistics, and to add color and life to the emotional stories ofnursing care.As an example, the authors describe cases of nurses who have saved the lives of countless veteransfrom the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The media articles that are generated by these heroic acts ofnurses using their professional knowledge and skills, give credit solely to the physicians who “saved”the veterans. Further examples discuss common damaging nursing images in themedia. One common misportrayal is that nursing is an extension of medicine, not a distinct science, and something that anyone can do after a quick read on the Internet. The “handmaiden” stereotypeshows nurses as doctors’ “yes men”- seen prominently in Grey’s Anatomy— and are simply there tocarry out any and all medical commands. The authors illustrate this power imbalance betweenmedicine and nursing with innovative Venn diagrams highlighting the power imbalance. The authorsalso discuss the “naughty nurse”, “angel” and “battle axe” images that they show are damaging tonursing.Throughout the book, the authors draw the reader to the effects that the media’s portrayal of nursinghas on the way decision-makers think about nursing, which is not only blatantly inaccurate, butdangerous to the public’s health. The authors discuss how this negative image results in poor careand treatment—of patients and nurses. The media images set up negative stereotypes that aregrounded in sexism and power imbalances that contribute to the uniformly negative international imageof nursing.Ultimately, the authors don’t let the build up of negative examples in the seven chapters concerningthe main nursing stereotypes impede them from ending the book with a powerful positive message tothe public and to nurses on the roles they can and should play to improve public understanding ofnursing and nursing portrayals in the media. The authors discuss what steps each group—generalpublic, physician, journalist or nurse—can do to make a difference to improve the image ofnurses. The authors argue that an improved nursing image will not only help strengthen nursing as aprofession, but will by extension improve health care and patient care delivery as a whole.Saving Lives is a book that uses the media’s depiction of nursing to intelligentlydiscuss how important and critical nurses and nursing care are to patients and the health caresystem—educating readers about the value of nursing. Nurses and other health care professionals can also use this book as aneducational tool to remind us about professions' true skills and value to healthcare. Additionally, the book advocates for changes in the media that could impact the plight of nursesinternationally, raising global professionalism. The book advances health care and celebrates nursingas an autonomous and distinct science. The book advocates for nurses with its own leaders whoquietly and professionally serve patients everyday and are the true unsung heroes of the health caresystem, savings lives each and every day.I urge you to buy this book and apply its message to our fragile health care system- read it, listen to its message, and implement the changes it proposes. If this were in a peer reviewed journal and the nursingprofession ignored it, we would all be culpable for the continued damaging effects that the negativeimage of nursing in the media has on health care and by extension, our patients.

I am an avid reader and I have to say, this is the greatest book I've ever read. This book holds the keys to national prosperity. It's almost unfathomable to me that one book can teach so much. You will learn about what an economy is, trade, wages, banking, monetary policy, taxes, public debts, agriculture, history, the list goes on and on.This book is must-read.Now a review of this specific edition: The font is quite small which makes it hard to read. This is especially a consideration for a 586 page book. I suggest finding another (rather than this Simon & Brown).

I should have read the description closer, but this is not a complete edition of the work. This is only one book of 5, so about 20% of the total text. As to the quality of it with this in mind, terrible. The type chosen is small and not attractive looking. If your eyesight it poor it will be hard to read. You can download the work for free many places on the internet. I prefer to have a physical book, but after this I will be much more careful in the future. In summary, this is basically a scam and a money grab. Do yourself a favor and don't order this. You're welcome.

I have read Wealth of Nations a couple of times and decided to download a copy to my phone so I can have it on hand always. Saying that, I still feel if you want to know how we (the middle class) got in such a financial quandary nowadays, I say go back to the best tutorial ever written, (so far). Adam Smith's insight into the business man's mind is as point on today as it was in the 1700's. He warned us then, what is happening now; fiat money, collusion, government favoritism, etc. Problem is, people would have to pick up a book and read about the darker side of the business world and the effect it has on the 'consumer', 'citizen', and 'environment'. It is difficult to influence a population with one book; when the population is bombarded 24/7 with business propaganda. As Smith says, "I have never known much good done by those who affected to trade for the public good." Today, I watch with amazement as every industry, (oil, auto industry, agri-business, etc.), advertise how 'green' and 'pro-consumer' they are.

The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith is truly an epic classic in our time. This 1000+page is obviously not that easy to read. (Especially in the part that he discusses Silver, etc.) Some of the ideas are ones that we've become very familiar with in our modern lives, not only in the field of economics, but also in politics, religion, law, and finance.Particularly interesting were his thesis on "Division of Labor"(page 15), rules of market place based on self interest(page 23-24), description of banking crisis (page 395), free trade (page 572, with the famous "invisible hand"), property rights (page 684), description of Founding Fathers in US (page 790), free market principle (page 873), rule of law (page 901, 1157), role of government (page 919), human nature and incentives (page 965), freedom of religion (page 1000-1001), progressive tax system (page 1065), government debt (page 1171), currency devaluation (page 1185).Many of the ideas that form a basis of American/Western society can be traced back to the ideas found in Wealth of Nations, which would be no small feat. (Rules of the market place, rule of law, property rights, freedom of religion comes to mind.)I would recommend it to anyone who has the will and time to peruse this superb volume.

Very disappointed with this format. It is obvious that it is printed on demand in the cheapest way possible. The print is small, the pages are filled top to bottom and edge to edge with print. Do yourself a favor and buy a used copy hardbound and you will be very happy.

One star only because the book was received damaged. The front page was torn at the spine - most of the way. For the price it is not worth returning, so I will get some glue and try to glue it back together.

It's Adam Smith. It's Wealth of Nations. It's foundational. There's nothing to critique about the book in this paltry review that all shed worthwhile light on the text itself that hasn't been more intelligently and fully examined over the last few hundred years by thousands of economists and thinkers around the world. However, as far as the Kindle version is concerned, and I'm only specifically talking about the format/medium of this text, that's just ok. Most of these free Kindle books leave a lot to be desired and this is no different. Since it wasn't translated we don't have to argue over the quality of the interpretation, however it is a dense tome and I find these require a little more navigation for full digestion. A lot of flipping back and forth, checking out the index, notes, table of contents, previous chapters, etc. And all of this is a bit challenging to do on the Kindle. Nevertheless, the text seems to fine. Scanned alright. So if you want to casually explore the thoughts of Smith on a less than ideal platform, here you go. As a scholar, I'd prefer a hard copy.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the creation of wealth. This revision had me spellbound taking me on a time warp trip with his research into a historical past before the time of writing. The answers to the world’s economic problems of to-day maybe found in the pages but are overlooked by the modern views of society, socialistic / communistic ideologies and a warping of word meanings. From man’s beginnings there have always been those that have found it easier to take that which was not theirs, be it the historical royalty, clergy, modern politician or intelligentsia, the reason has always been the same, they deserve it. Removing incentive and insecure private property rights from the equation by taxing the world’s true wealth producing minority to support all others will in the end collapse all forms of progress and wealth creation. I could happily re-read from page one, just to be sure no small morsel was overlooked.

First, on the book itself. The photographs are clear, the paper is thick, and the hardcover binding is superior. What makes the book outstanding in addition to the many photos of Lenin statues are the thought provoking comments by Ukrainians--more than a dozen pages. Here is a single quote from a paragraph too large to insert here: "It's obvious that a nation won't unite under the single idea of toppling Lenin!" If you have any interest at all in Russian history, monuments, or Ukraine, this book is a must for your library! It is the perfect addition to my Russian library.

This modestly priced, smartly written, and beautifully photographed and designed book on the purge of Communist symbols has given me some insight into the assault on Confederate statues and monuments. The toppling of Vladimir Lenin’s statues in the Ukraine is admittedly dissimilar to the campaign to get rid of Confederate Generals, principally in the southern United States. One difference is the enemies of Lenin monuments are far right, not far left as they are in America. Both groups however fulfill Yeats’ prophecy in “The Second Coming”: “The best lack all conviction, while the worst / are full of passionate intensity.”Another similarity is that there doesn’t appear to be any consensus among Ukrainians as to what it all means. A difference is that Lenin has been much more brutalized than our now discredited icons. With one exception that I know about, our Confederate monuments are merely moved or in some cases splashed with paint. Many times, the Ukrainians chop them up and leave their parts scattered about a very disheveled landscape. Artists incorporate parts into bizarre sculptures. To keep large bronze examples from scrap metal pillagers they must be hidden. There is a collector trade in smaller Lenin statues and busts. Our tributes to rebel generals are a bit better-crafted and more individual than the dull, repetitive, uninspired sculptures of Comrade Lenin. American Beaux Arts works may not be trendy, but they are esthetically superior to the products of the communist propaganda workshops.Niels Ackermann’s sharp photographs imaginatively juxtapose these cast-off symbols of tyranny in a disordered environment. The running transcriptions of the overall puzzlement of Ukrainian citizens written by Sebastien Gobert are at times hilarious and parallel American puzzlement. A few Ukrainians, like Yevgenia Moliar, curator of art projects of Kyiv Foundation, thoughtfully point out the unanticipated consequences of statue toppling. Officials in favor of statue destruction censor discussion of the subject: “They’ve tried to create a state ideology that condemns any form of criticism.” This, ironically, has caused a renaissance of support for these relics: “In my opinion, nothing did more for the popularity of Soviet symbolism than the current process of decommunisation.”What I got most of all out of this was a similarity in the diversity of responses to both decommunisation in the Ukraine and purging the memory of slavery in the U.S. Whatever the justification, both campaigns will leave an empty public space with nothing to replace the banished statuary. Myroslava Hartmond wrote in the beginning essay, “Leninfall is not just an act of violence against history. The empty plinths that litter the towns and villages of Ukraine today, much like the stumps of felled trees, attest to its destructiveness. They become points of convergence for contending visions of national representation, posing the question: What’s next?”Congratulations to the publisher, Fuel. Last Christmas I gave copies of their provocative book, Soviet Bus Stops, to my wife and two sons. It was well received by this generally critical group. I’ll be purchasing multiple copies of this intriguing book for next Christmas.

Review

Praise for Cubed:"... Excellent ... fresh and intellectually omnivorous ... Saval is a vigorous writer, and a thoughtful one. What puts him above the rank of most nonfiction authors, even some of the better ones, is that he doesn’t merely present information. He turns each new fact over in his mind, right in front of you, holding it to the light."—Dwight Garner, The New York Times"Cubed is...a pleasure to read: beautifully written and clearly organized. Since many Americans now, women as well as men, spend more than half their waking hours at work, it's also an important exploration."—Richard Sennett, The New York Times Book Review"Lush, funny, and unexpectedly fascinating ... [G]enius ... Cubed stands as one of those books readers can open to any page and find the kind of insight they’ll want to yank strangers out of their bus or subway seats and repeat ... [A] beautifully written, original, and essential masterpiece."—Jerry Stahl, Bookforum"There are a lot of books about work... but Cubed offers something different: an entertaining look at the history of the modern worker that the modern worker can actually learn from."—Rosecrans Baldwin, NPR"Impressive... Beautifully written... delightfully readable..." —Martin Filler, The New York Review of Books"Thorough and diligent...Saval works hard, and effectively, to demonstrate how the evolution of workspaces paralleled social shifts in the workforce that we’re still living out.... Saval is a tireless researcher, and he turns phrases with a flair that would get an Organization Man fired."—Jennifer Howard, The Washington Post Book World"... Cleverly pieced together...subtle and sophisticated."—Jill Lepore, The New Yorker"Nikil Saval's new book, Cubed: A Secret History of the Workplace, is a fascinating guide to the intellectual history of the American office. Part cultural history, part architectural analysis and part management theory—with some labor economics, gender studies and pop culture thrown in for good measure—the book is a smart look at the evolution of the place where we spend so much of our lives."—The Washington Post"In his first book, Saval sets out to chronicle the evolution of the American office from airless prison to what it is today, reflecting upon the transformation of the office worker from emasculated novelty to unremarkable figure of ubiquity. To accomplish this, he synthesizes an impressive number of books, films, articles, and first-person accounts relating to the daunting number of historical forces and ideologies that have shaped white-collar work: architecture, philosophy, labor disputes, class conflict, the women’s movement, and technological advances, just to name a few. Saval considers each of them, forming a cogent and compelling narrative that could very easily have been scattered or deathly dull. To keep things lively, Saval deploys deft analytical skills and a tone that’s frequently bemused, making difficult and important concepts palatable to the casual reader."—The Boston Globe"Over the past week, as I've been carrying around a copy of Nikil Saval's Cubed: A Secret History of the Workplace, I've gotten some quizzical looks. 'It's a history of the office,' I'd explain, whereupon a good number of people would respond, 'Well, that sounds boring.' It isn't. In fact, Cubed is anything but... Saval's book glides smoothly between his two primary subjects: the physical structure of offices and the social institutions of white-collar work over the past 150 years or so. Cubed encompasses everything from the rise of the skyscraper to the entrance of women in the workplace to the mid-20th-century angst over grey-flannel-suit conformity to the dorm-like 'fun' workplaces of Silicon Valley. His stance is skeptical, a welcome approach given that most writings on the contemporary workplace are rife with dubious claims to revolutionary innovation—office design or management gimmicks that bestselling authors indiscriminately pounce on like magpies seizing glittering bits of trash."—Salon.com"Five days a week I commute to a skyscraper in the main business district of a large city and sit at a desk within whispering distance of another desk. Whatever the word 'work' used to conjure, my version is now quite standard. About 40 million Americans make a living in some sort of cubicle. Are we happy about that? The likelihood that we are not is central to Nikil Saval's impressive debut, Cubed: A Secret History of the Workplace."—The New Republic"... Formidable ... Beautifully rendered ... Sections of the book shine—especially when it discusses gender in the workplace ... The elegance of his prose and the intensity of his moral commitment linger."—The Nation"... Cubed is so stimulating, so filled with terrific material and shrewd observations, that it’s a must-read for anyone pondering how America arrived at its current state of white-collar under-employment and economic insecurity."—The Daily Beast"...[A] sharp and absorbing history of the office."—The Economist"Saval's book... stands out as one of the best pop histories to come out in years, and on a topic that most of us (statistically speaking) can relate to."—Fast Company"[An] absorbing history of office life...It sits cheerily between the academic and the journalistic register...Saval's style is nicely spiked with colloquialism... [His] debunking temper serves him well."—The Guardian"... An entertaining read ... Saval's readings of pop culture representations of the office and its workers add a lively and ironic perspective."—Publishers Weekly"Ferociously lucid and witty."—Kirkus Reviews"A sprightly historical tour of the vexed, overplanned world of the modern workplace."—In These Times“Marvellous… in the vein of Barbara Ehrenreich’s brilliant renderings of the ‘Inner Life of the Middle Class’… Saval’s accomplishment is to restore the strangeness of the common cube.”—Michael Denning, New Left Review"Part cultural study, part architectural analysis...a fascinating journey through the history of the American office environment from cubicle life with a dress code to Google-fied fun spaces with Fussball tables."—Theis Duelund, Los Angeles Magazine“Why did no one write this necessary book before now? Never mind: it wouldn’t have been as good. Cubed has that combination of inevitability and surprise that marks the best writing—and thinking.”—Benjamin Kunkel, author of Indecision “Required reading for anyone who works in an office, and for those fortunate enough to have escaped.”—Ed Park, author of Personal Days "Nikil Saval is a superstar! He does for offices what Foucault did for prisons and hospitals, transforming a seemingly static, purely functional, self-evident institution into a rich human story, full of good and bad intentions, chance, and historical forces. Reading Cubed is like watching an amazing magic trick where the very boringness of the office turns out to be what is the most interesting. I found myself wishing he would do waiting rooms next."—Elif Batuman, author of The Possessed

This is one of those books that ended up getting a good bit of press because it was a novel way of looking at something that is an everyday thing. The way that white collar workers do their work didn’t just happen that way, but it was a result of deliberate choices – from the architecture of the buildings that the work is done in to the furniture that the workers sit on. I hadn’t thought too deeply about it, thinking that the way things are was just a bit like the way things were, only with computers. I was wrong, and Saval tracks the changes, focused on the United States from the industrial revolution on. The white-collar worker has not been devoid of the standardization and alienation that the blue-collar worker had and rebelled against. The white-collar worker just never saw their white-collar chains; instead, they looked up, hoping to move up the ladder (no matter how false that metaphor is or was). The potential for striving has, writ large, been the barrier to class to recognition of the white-collar worker for generations. The lack of upward mobility except for into the white-collar ranks is what led to unionism and workers improving their lots. The myth of upward mobility in white-collar terms is a form of social control that is not readily seen.Saval tracks this, and it makes me think if this has been a deliberate move. As production has been mechanized, there are fewer production workers and more support staff in ancillary roles to production. As more workers move out of production and the workforce is more and more professionalized, white-collar membership is the mass of workers. It is the cube that keeps them apart and alienated. Maybe it is a prison of sorts. Me?I’m not part of this at all.My office has a door.

Struggled to finish this bland and verbose book. Not for the faint of heart. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone who is on an academic search for antiquated workplace practices

Interesting read, but the author goes off on difficult to follow tangents from time to time. Saval's choice of words can be a bit obtuse. If I wasn't currently a college student accustomed to reading academic literature, I would have found this book unmanageable at times. Regardless, interesting content overall.

Cubed is really about people, their motivations, their successes and failures. It spends a lot of pages on why people, both men and women, wanted to become white-collar workers and how they coped with the office landscapes that organizations built for their employees. Read this book and you will never look fondly at any skyscraper of any vintage with admiration again, for in one way or another too many offices were, and too often still are, dehumanizing.Saval ranges widely. The author is well read on a large variety of subjects that are important to his overall discussion. He

Heard an interview of Nikil Saval on 7th Avenue Project and knew I HAD to check this book out—I was NOT disappointed. It's a fascinating accounting on the evolution of the office, its design, and the varied influences (social, economic, etc.) that cross-pollinated to get where we are today. Excellent treatment, especially on design elements and open-concept (open-source) workspace. Kudos!

A good history of a subject that I would not have originally thought would be so interesting. It is more than just about the office cubicle. It is about the history of office work, city architecture, labor relations, changing business structure and much more. If like me you have spent much of your working career in an office cubicle, you will find much to relate to.

Nikil provides a wonderful narrative examining management philosophy, architecture and design, and culture over time. As a business school professor I appreciated learning more about how important the physical environment of the office is to the organizational culture that emerges, and visa versa.

My office furniture salesman son had this on his Christmas wish list. It's very interesting!
