Loved this book. Although protagonist might have attitudes more in concert w our contemporary ones, the entire piece bristles w terrifically drawn characters and surprisingly insightful writing about Africa. Loved the encounters w the pygmies and the growing maturity of Tom. Lovely read.

I enjoyed this book. It is probably more of a YA book, but I still liked it.

Very well written

As the adage goes, Mom knows best, so when opportunity knocks to better his position - in the form of a chance to join Henry Morton Stanley's Relief of Emin Pasha Expedition in 1887 arrives his way - sixteen-year-old Tom Ormsby, a low-level employee at Burroughs & Wellcome, seizes it. Okay, this wasn't exactly what his mother had in mind, but what young man could resist? Certainly not Ormsby, whose role in this adventure with actual historic roots, goes by the label general dogsbody, nevertheless imagines achieving fame and glory, thanks to fervent readings of adventure novels. But upon disembarking in Africa, reality sets in fast. Soon, he'll be stumbling through vine-choked vegetation, risking attack by cannibals and other natives, and figuring out how to maintain some form of humanity in a world where chaos is the only constant.Although the novel starts out strong, I found my attention flagging once the crew reached the Congo. The reason was the style that Tom used to record his findings: more like a journalist than a young boy coming of age on a once-in-a-lifetime expedition. Again and again, we are treated to a factual account of how many men desert or are murdered, and how many supplies are left. Life threatening risks (a tree falling on a character, an animal attack, etc.) are resolved just a paragraph later, decreasing drama. I also questioned the political correctness of the protagonist which at times seemed unrealistic for someone of his time and era, even though they seem self-evident to someone living in 2013. Even the most compassionate person of that time still grew up with some attitudes that seem reprehensible nowadays. But I did learn a lot about this period in Great Britain's history with Africa exploration. Overall, the book succeeds as interesting and informative non-fiction, even when it fails as a true, edge-of-your-seat adventure story.

Kathleen Karr's "Born for Adventure" is the story of Tom Ormesby, a young man from Great Britain during the reign of Queen Victoria who's bored with his life and just about everything in it. He figures there has to be more to life than mere drudgery, so when he gets the opportunity to join up with Henry Morton Stanley's latest expedition "in relief of Emin Pasha" in blackest Africa (and this is how Tom thinks of it, too), Tom goes.Tom, of course, is your typical older teen in that he thinks he's much wiser, kinder, smarter and accomplished than he actually is. However, Tom does have skills that come in handy during the expedition to first find Emin Pasha (a German emigré who's oddly in charge of a specific part of Africa due to both Pasha's own wishes and the then-current political situation), most particularly a flexibility of mind as Tom can seemingly turn his hand to just about anything.Giving someone like Tom this many skills -- Tom can serve meals with aplomb like a trusted servant, helps the doctor to the point that the doctor is willing to write a letter of reference for him in case Tom's willing to become a doctor in turn, etc. -- could've backfired badly, but Ms. Karr handles her hero brilliantly. You see, Tom, like the African men he often oversees, has very little power in the current hierarchy. No matter how many skills he has (and as already stated, he has many), he's always seen as a servant by Stanley and Stanley's officers (save the doctor, who's ego is apparently more flexible than most). And because of this, he can empathize far better with the men he often oversees.Many questions are raised during "Born for Adventure," including the following:Is it right for one country to impose its own standards on another?How can anyone believe that Queen Victoria and her advisors, so far away and with little direct knowledge of the situation "on the ground," can understand anything of what's going on in her African colonies?Would some of the tribes have resorted to cannibalism if they'd been left alone, or even if they'd been treated with some modicum of respect?And, finally, is it right for people who've been born to a higher station to automatically assume that they're morally superior in every way, shape, or form?While some of how Tom acts is a bit anachronistic for the time period, Ms. Karr gives good reasons for why Tom behaves the way he does. Tom's inner monologue is excellent, the story structure is good, and the actual adventures that Tom and the others go through -- all historically documented (though Tom himself is the author's conceit) -- are hair-raising in and of themselves.In other words, "Born for Adventure" is a story that works on every level. It's an excellent "coming of age" story for Tom. It's an excellent action-adventure. It's strong, historically speaking, and the events being discussed are both well-rendered and true to life. This book is sooooo British. Some of the phrases were almost laughably hoity toity, but a british child, anglophile, or person otherwise acquainted with British vernacular of the Victorian/Edwardian era, would have no issues understanding.This is the story of a young man (boy, really) who manages to get himself a job on a ship venturing into the heart of Africa. He learns quite a lot in the first few pages alone about humanity, both his own, his captains, and that of the world at large.I don't want to give away too much plot here.The story is perfect for a teen or avid pre-teen (even a precocious 10 year old could probably handle it). It does have quite a lot of exposition (as opposed to being dialogue driven), so someone who is used to Harry Potter or similar may be thrown for a few pages.It is intensely emotional and requires the reader examine his own beliefs about slavery, humanity, compassion, in a deep self reflection. I think the characters are wonderfully crafted, being complex and multi faceted (for the most part), and not the one-dimensional archetypes we've become so used to seeing.The writing style is quite different from most YA fiction, but once you get past that, the story and characters will pull you in well enough!

Seriously, I applique only when I absolutely have to. (Love the look, but hate the process.) And foundation piecing? I'd rather go paperless. Yet I bought Lynn Ann Majidimehr's Flower Show Quilts knowing it involved both techniques. Why? I took a few good looks online (using Amazon's "See All Product Images") and clicked "Add To Cart" within seconds.The quilts are beautiful, not only because of the lovely layered applique, but also for their richly pieced backgrounds, which vary from a basic checkerboard ("Summer Floral Tablerunner") to one with Courthouse Steps blocks ("Pink Dahlias").What you can't see so well online is the amazing detail in the quilting itself. Not only are the backgrounds quilted in imaginative ways, but the appliques themselves are extensively quilted, adding more depth and contour. Nothing flat going on here! Crazy quilting stitches, embroidery, and beading make these quilts even more spectacular.About the applique:The author uses both fusible applique (she prefers Mistyfuse for its thinness) and freezer-paper/glue-based applique (for larger designs). Each project is clearly identified by which of the two applique methods it employs, and ample instructions and illustrative photos are provided. The results reveal layers of detail, rich without being fussy or complicated.About the foundation piecing:Only one project (the Asymmetrical Clematis) uses foundation piecing. Even the author admits to not liking certain aspects of traditional paper-piecing; she prefers the freezer-paper method because it eliminates the need to pick out all those pesky little bits of paper. She explains very well how this is done, and I am looking forward (gasp!) to trying this method.About the projects:There are 10 applique projects, all of which feature show-stopping florals: spider mums, orchids, poppies, lilies, 2 different clematis variations, iris, dahlias, and 2 summer medleys .Some projects feature just a single appliqued set, while others use repeated blocks of appliqued flowers. Finished block sizes run from 12x12 to 18x18. Finished quilt sizes vary from one table runner (shown in 3 colorations) to wall-hangings (all around 36x36) to lap-size (the largest is 51x68.5). These are sizes that can be easily quilted on any domestic-arm sewing machine.About The Author:The author writes that she uses a computer to generate her designs and fuel her creativity; honestly, I am impressed that a computer could yield such organic and beautifully layered projects. Clearly, the author is underselling her own innate artistic talents here.Ms. Majidimehr also has a website [...], which has more ideas and gallery shots. I was pleased to see it is not a hard-sell for the book (though it has every right to be!) and I have a sense that there is a lot more to this author than what we get to see in her book.I happened to discover that the author is very accessible; I had a question about something I read in the book, so I emailed the address on the website. She responded to me in less than 18 hours, with a very friendly and detailed response. I don't often get a chance to make contact with authors, and in this case I particularly like knowing there really is someone behind a book I am enjoying so much.Ms. Majidimehr is causing me to happily reconsider my previous dislike for the methods of both applique and foundation piecing. If I could make a quilt even half as lovely as what she offers in Flower Show Quilts, I might also find happiness turning under all those edges. Seriously!

I had never thought of embellishing a pieced quilt with applique. The quilts in the book are good patterns. However, the appliques would not be suitable for needle turning because the pieces are too small. The applique designs would have to be simplified. So, this is more of a concept book for me rather than actual templates.

About the Author

John G. Hartnett received both his B.Sc. And his Ph.D. with distinction from the Department of Physics at the University of Western Australia. He works with the Frequency Standards and Metrology research group at the same university, where he holds the rank of Associate Professor (the equivalent of Reader in the UK which would be Full Professor in the USA). Dr. Hartnett has published more than 120 papers in scientific journals and holds two patents. He is a part-time speaker for Creation Ministries International and is an effective communicator on the relevance of creation to the gospel and the implications of evolutionary teaching in society today.

Well, the details of the equations(appendix) are for professionals.I cannot say the equations and solutions are correct or not.Anyway, the logics over observed facts seems much valid.The main parts are well organized to introduce and compare the new 5-D physics over 4-D Einstein relativity physics.According to this and the author's other book, only two problems remain.1. how the light from the original small universe with 8 million light year distance has come to us within only a day or so?2. if quasars are poped up from vaccum(surely not 'nothing') as the universe expands, where's the anti-matters? the author suggests this as the problem of big-bang.Anyhow, this is much less problems than big-bang to explain the universe.This Cameli-Hartnett Cosmological Relativity Theory shall be the main physics theory in some day.

I especially like that Dr. Hartnett did not give up his biblical beliefs about origins just because those beliefs have fallen out of favor with some people. His book gives us insight into the philosophical bias of many interpreters of the data, and some wonderful new theories related to our time, purpose, and place in the universe. Though I don't claim to technically understand many elements of the physics involved, Dr. Hartnett makes most of the concepts he presents comprehensible to those interested in cosmology, especially those with science/math backgrounds. I hope his theories will be given the consideration they deserve.

I really liked this book. Every creationist Bible believer is asked the questions "How could we see things billions of light-years from us if the earth is only 6000 years old? How did Adam and Eve see the stars on the 6th day of creation?" The book explains in plain language in the text and for those who want the science and math, he provides that in the appendices.

Starlight, Time and the New Physics: How we can see starlight in our young universe (2007) appears to be the most recent effort by a professionally-educated and trained physicist (Australian), who is also a creationist, to find a coherent synthesis (theory of concordism[1]) between the hard scientific evidences of modern cosmology and the Bible's account of creation set forth in the first chapter of Genesis.While a synthesis is theoretically possible in my opinion, it is a daunting task for a number of reasons...reasons which are beyond the scope of this book review. Like myself and other creationists, Dr. Hartnett believes that Genesis chapter 1 includes six, 24-hour rotational "days" as intuitively understood from daily experience. However, he seems at a disadvantage having to rely upon English language translations of Genesis and does not appear aware of the underlying grammatical and hermeneutical issues regarding the Hebrew text. This also adds to the complexity of the subject.Dr. Harnett's thesis, in part, is a response to Creation physicist Dr. Russell Humphreys' (Starlight and Time, 1994) challenge to propose alternative models of concordism. "We need more and better creationist cosmologies. I say `more' because mine may prove to have fatal flaws of its own, but if we have a *variety* of good theories to choose from, we are much more likely to find the truth" (p. 51). Humphreys was a pioneer with creation cosmology.The back cover of the book reads, "...the main text of Starlight, Time and the New Physics is easily digestible for the intelligent layperson." Don't believe this for one second. Being post college-educated myself, a creationist, born-again Christian and avid reader for nearly 45 years, I had to chuckle at the statement. I'm not sure whether he or the publisher had some particular group of "layperson" in mind or if they were simply attempting to promote sales for an esoteric subject. Chapters 1 to 7 are substantive and complex, and will challenge even those with good high school or entry-level college courses in physics and calculus. The six Technical Appendices require a grasp of advanced mathematics, physics, and cosmological science and are out of the cognitive reach of most.Dozens of books have been published attempting to educate the public in the basics of the scientific and metaphysical implications of Einstein's 20th century discoveries. I have several in my personal library. For the most part, a majority of the public are still living, cosmologically-speaking, in a pre-Einstein world. Like physicist Dr. Humphreys before him, Hartnett has made the necessary intellectual leap from a Newtonian concept of 3D space and independent absolute time to the 20th century discoveries of Albert Einstein's 4D "fabric of spacetime." This is a difficult challenge and shift for many. Despite the educational efforts of such men like astrophysicist Brian Greene (PBS The Elegant Universe series), the vast majority of the public (both Christian and non-Christian) have yet to break orbit from the observational and highly-intuitive views of Isaac Newton (1642 - 1727).CHAPTER 1: Readers are introduced to the core topic, the "starlight-travel-time problem," due to a cosmos that is both extraordinarily large yet also very young. How can both facts be simultaneously true? Since the advent of both modern astronomy and cosmology, the Bible's account of 6,000 plus years of earthly history has drawn ridicule and scorn from those who hold the Bible is simply a book of mythical stories. The apparent contradiction is often a favorite `straw man' argument. A most recent example was the February 2014 Internet "debate" between Bill Nye the "Science Guy" and Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis, where Nye raised the question but failed to grasp Ham's response.CHAPTER 2: This chapter begins by providing some basic modern physics and cosmology, but without adequately explaining the fundamental scientific evolution in perspective from Isaac Newton to Albert Einstein. In my opinion, a majority of the public are trapped, metaphysically and cosmologically speaking, in the 19th century. Wonderfully, the author catches a glimpse of the historical issue, "The underlying problem may be a reluctance by creationist cosmologists to break with the idea that time is absolute and that it has always flowed at a constant rate throughout the universe" p. 22. Unfortunately, he still is prone to set creationists and "big bangers" in juxtaposition to each other. Christians need to humbly keep in mind that we have an epistemological advantage. He concludes the chapter by listing five possible solutions to the "starlight-travel-time problem" introduced in the previous chapter.CHAPTER 3: Dr. Hartnett raises the hot topics of contemporary astrophysics--"dark matter" and "dark energy." If the reader is lost by now, this chapter will doom him or her for sure. Dr. Hartnett moves rather quickly in assuming his audience has an adequate grasp of both "general and special relativity" as well as Einstein's understanding of "the fabric of spacetime." Yikes! Better brew up a very large pot of coffee. Here the reader is also introduced to the advanced theoretical physics of Moshe Carmeli, his "cosmological special relativity," and 5th dimension of reality--spacevelocity. (I'm still working to understand Carmeli.)CHAPTER 4: Here, the author deals heavily with the light received from distant stars and how it's interpreted (spectral analysis) by physicists, both in the past and present. This is the realm of the electromagnetic spectrum, "redshifts," and "blueshifts." Hartnett also deals with Einstein's field equations which supposedly describe the shape of the cosmos. Here, he appears to make an admission which should have been made much earlier. "But don't be mistaken; though Carmeli is some sort of rebel in that he has challenged the established thinking, in his mind his new theory does not present as anything more than a new type of big bang model. However, we can apply the same theory to extract a new model (Harnett's `New Physics') that is consistent with what we would expect, starting with the Genesis history" p. 67.CHAPTER 5: This chapter deals with the shape and size of the universe, the "cosmological principle" (homogeneity) and the distribution of galaxies, and what philosophical/theological significance there might be to where our solar system is positioned in the universe. This is NOT a discussion of geocentrism vs. heliocentrism of our local solar system, which has long been resolved by astronomy science.CHAPTER 6: The author focuses upon the concurrence of modern cosmology and the biblical revelation of God's "stretching" the heavens. From the beginning in chapter 1, Dr. Hartnett has been rather dogmatic about the hyper-distention (inflation) taking place on Day 4 of creation (p.10, 24, 93-95, 101, 103, 109, 113, and 115) in contrast to any initial `big bang' singularity. He seems to base this on the placement in the text of Genesis 1:16c "He also made the stars" or "He made the stars also." Hartnett would appear to assert a strict chronology that "God created the heavenly bodies (stars and galaxies)" on Day 4, but assigns NO chronological significance to the testimony of Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." John Hartnett's book presents a theory I've been waiting for, a theory of the universe's history that takes account of relative time and spacial dimensions. Hartnett shows it is not just science fiction, but something reliably worked out with the math to back it up. I recommend it for those with some math and physics background who think the Biblical view of creation is not credible.However there are two issues. First is that his presentation is for those who already understand a bit of physics and astronomy so it doesn't come out as simpe as he suggests he's trying to present. However he does recommend other material that is supposed to provide the background and his work is full of references one can explore.My major complaint is with the Kindle version. I expect a Kindle book that costs almost $10 to be usefully formatted. This is not. The equations are largely incomprehensible with parts of them completely missing. The charts are probably jpegs that are very, very hard to read. For $0.99 books, I'll put up with it, but for more money I at least expect the format to be worthy of publication. This isn't.

The book is excellent. Dr. John Hartnett using Carmeli's improvements to general relativity physics, CGR and 5-D theory, has been able to show that light from the most distant stars as well as intermediate stars reached the earth on day 4 of biblical creation week. Hartnett has used the 5-D theory and rapidly expanding space velocity during day 4 to indicate that cosmic clocks ran a billion times faster than those on earth thus allowing starlight, at the normal speed of light, to reach the earth in one day.

We live in a time when unsubstantiated science is reported as “fact” because it suits a certain ideological and political agenda. I find this book’s honesty and search for truth very refreshing. The author is highly qualified and a scientist of integrity.

When I was reading this book, I was quite shocked to see that when I reached page 89, the following page was 119. The book skipped 33 entire pages. Not only that, but after reading pages 119-150, they REPEATED pages 119-150. So, not only was I missing 33 pages, but 41 pages were repeated in the space of my missing pages. A huge chunk of the book was missing, not even having been ripped out, but the book was bound like that. The content I was able to read was very interesting, although nothing new to any other books I've read about Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan.

In 1887, Annie Sullivan (age 20) goes to Alabama to try to teach Helen Keller (age 6, who is deaf and blind) how to communicate. Told from Annie's point of view, it talks about her struggles before moving to Alabama from Massachusetts, and what her life was like before she had surgery to restore her own eyesight. Helen proves very difficult to teach. Her family has spoiled her and inadvertently reinforced that crying and being physically violent is the way to get what she wants, because they can't bear to see her upset. It is mostly a story about frustration, emotional turmoil, and feeling defeated; however, it has a bright ending, as we already know the outcome of Annie Sullivan's time spent teaching Helen Keller.I like how each chapter begins with an except from actual letters written by Annie Sullivan, documenting her challenges and time spent with Helen Keller.I would probably recommend this novel to girls. It's major themes are perseverance and success in the face of adversity, and accepting others who are different or have a handicap.

Twenty-year-old, half-blind, fiery tempered Annie Sullivan is on her way to Tuscumbia, Alabama to teach six-year-old Helen Keller, who has been deaf, blind, and mute from the young age of 19 months. After her first lesson, Helen does not seem to understand that d-o-l-l means the word "doll." Annie is infuriated, and explodes in rage. Luckily, Helen's doting aunt, Ev, convinces Annie to stay, and Annie does.Annie is still trying to break into Helen's silent night, but she is afraid that she is not experienced enough to do the job. Will Annie breakthrough to Helen, or will she become a failure, and Helen live an empty life? If you've watched the movie, you've "read" the book. The kids in my class loved it, but I was unimpressed.

The life of the Mother of God, as told to Sister Mary of Agreda. Very little is said about Our Lady in the Bible, as she explained to Mary of Agreda. This was because it would have taken attention away from Jesus. The wonders of Mary are contained in this little book, almost as well as they are in the four volume set. When she entered Egypt, with St. Joseph and the Baby Jesus, escaping from Herod, the idols of the Egyptians fell apart. On the voyage to the isle of Patmos, with St. John the Evangelist, fish stood upright in the ocean.....so many of them that the boat had to stop. And so much is footnoted with a Bible passage, and, sure enough. I checked it out as I read. It is there.Mary of Agreda is now laying in her coffin.......incorruptible. She can be seen on line, and, has been called 'Sleeping Beauty'

Beautiful books! I'm still reading the first book and will be bringing this on my beach vacation. Better to read a little bit every day to ponder on the wealth of information! I will enjoy reading these for years to come! Mary of Agreda was very blessed by God to receive these insightful visions. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

I purchased a used set of the Mystical City of God, volumes 1 through 4, and although their bindings are slightly worn, their pages are perfect and in excellent condition. I'm almost done with the first volume, and it's been such a blessing to read. By the way, one of the many things I've learned so far, is that the "City of God" is the Lord's own name for our Blessed Mother. This will be an incredible journey.

I bought these books almost a year ago and have almost finished reading them through for the 2nd time. I usually read just one chapter a day to let each one soak in. I am so thankful that I ran across these books. I intend to continue reading them from now on until all of these mysteries and messages from Our Lady are forever engrained in my memory because they are so important. It surprises me that when reading them for the second time, how many of the details I had forgotten but the second time through provides an even deeper richness of the beauty of this history. I am often brought to tears of love and thanksgiving. I can't recommend these enough for those thinking of purchasing them. They will change your life and bring you closer to the Holy Family, the apostles, the angels and give you a deeper appreciation for the Catholic Church founded by Christ and the grace He offers us through the Sacraments to help us one day be with Him in Heaven.I also highly recommend Maria of Agreda: Mystical Lady in Blue by Marilyn H. Fedewa. It is the biography of the nun who chronicled this life of Our Lady. Her life in itself was amazing and filled with much hardship as she accepted the request from Jesus and Mary to record this history. I often pray for her canonization so that more will be inspired to read Mystical City of God--a true treasure and gift from God.

While the original work of which this is a translation, La mística ciudad de Dios, provides fascinating insights into the perception of the Virgin Mary within the Catholic church at its time (and, as evidenced by the other reviews provided, can be spiritually uplifting for those of such a mindset, However, this translation leaves a great deal to be desired. The original grammar and sentence structure are lost, subtly altering the message and feel of the work. There are also a number of clear errors as the translator attempts to interpret and clarify the work. For example, in the first volume, there is an instance in which this translation states that there are three principles demonstrated in a specific section of the text, though it is difficult to discern three discrete principles. The original Spanish makes no mention of the number three nor any number in particular.In general, if you intend to study this work and have the ability, studying it in the original Spanish is a significantly more satisfying experience.

I am only half way through the first volume, but I read every chance I can, this book is that compelling. I consider it a singular grace from God to be able to read this and an even greater grace to know I am learning truths very few souls will ever be blessed enough to know. If you Love Our Lord and His Blessed Mother you will want to read this. Think of it as, " Advanced Catholicism".I have finished reading all four volumes, about 2800 pages. I intend to go back and highlight explanations that should help me be a better Catholic and Disciple of Jesus living in Mary. It is a true blessing to read these words, and it is a miracle that four centuries later it is still in print, is available in English in both hard cover and Paperback. While not holy scripture it illuminates the Scriptures and helps explain the many mysteries of God's church, One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic. It probably helps that I did The Total Consecration to Mary and read the writings of St. Louis De Monfort before reading this excellent work. After the Holy Gospels and the New Testament scriptures I could not imagine a work that Lucifer and the demons of hell would despise more than this.UPDATE . . . I am half way through Volume 3 of 4, nothing I already said has been changed, except that I am privileged beyond reason to learn such truths and wisdom, and I am unquestionably the lowest of God's creation, lower even than the dust and filth from which God formed me because the filth has never sinned against God, and I have sinned in thought, word and deed more times than I can count. May God have mercy and grant that I atone whenever possible for those infinite offenses against the omnipotent goodness that sustains me, My Lord and My God. Seek God above and before all things, nothing in this world is worth anything except that we find God by the immensely powerful graces He bestows on us through the intercession of His Holy Mother.

"Walking Home" covers the Barefoot Sisters' yo-yo hike of the Appalachian Trail, this time from Georgia in March to Maine in October. Where their first book covers their hike north to south, done largely in the winter months, this one is done mostly during the more conventional spring and summer seasons.The Barefoot Sisters write well, and relate their experiences with an openness and truthfulness that some other hiking books seem to lack. They convey effectively the spirituality and simplicity of the trail throughout. During their walk home back to Maine they encounter Lyme disease, the 9/11 attacks and how some hikers seemed to use their trip as an escape, as well as Barefoot Sister jackrabbit's depression. They also encounter the amazing generosity and trust in the hiking community, make new friends, and run into some old friends they made on their first journey including Tuba Man.I read and enjoyed their first book, "Southbound," and "Walking Home" is a very worthy companion. If you are interested in hiking or the outdoors, you will probably want to read both. They will help renew your faith in the basic goodness of people.

This and their first book might have been entitled, "Trail Society, the Wandering Community of the AT." It makes me think of nothing so much as the freak community of the late '60's - early '70's. Ah, to be in my twenties again and on the trail again! This is a good intro by a pair of competent, fit, more-or-less sane, strong and together ladies, Isis and jackrabbit, told without undue dramatics or puffery. They did not retreat to the woods because they were walking wounded seeking healing; they went because they wanted another adventure before getting tangled up in graduate school and professional obligations. I think a sociologist might have fun looking at the trail folks - if he or she was willing to strap on forty pounds and climb a mountain after breakfast each morning!

Really appreciated finishing this tale, loved the trail experiences, loved reliving and seeing the places where I'd been decades ago, but....I have some difficulty with reading about how these two hiked the AT; they got on it and off of it so many times, took countless "zeros," even went to FL in the middle of the hike!!!not to mention-slack packing and having a kegger along the way. It was of course, their own hike, but it read in some spots like a moveable party from hostel to hostel. Of course they were serious about the trail- to each their own, I suppose.Maybe I'm just jealous of their good time agenda- or, maybe life along the AT has morphed into this kind of a free will experience, I don't know--it was just different when I did it. Their trip was not all fun and games either--there were some serious problems which surfaced - physically and mentally too. I'm not questioning their dedication to doing this "thru" hike, they certainly did hike/yo yo hike the AT. Just that they seemed to spend almost as much time off the trail as on. I thought the essence of a thru hike was to get on it and stay on it - with as little time off as possible. I was 23 when I did it, but had to stop around 1/2 way due to going back to work to make some money before college. I would have given just about anything to have been a thru hiker to Springer Mountain - but I had a scholarship waiting. So, I sectioned hiked the next summer, but only did small sections, since I had a part time job. Again, time ran out due to $ and school, so I'm completely envious, too that Jackrabbit and Isis did manage to turn around and come north. Now I have 16 yr old twins who very likely will do some of their own hiking one day.Who knows where their path begins....All in all, a good read, and somewhat inspiring, too - not everyone has the same itinerary, and that a is probably the real message behind their writing. It's probably the best way to approach this continuation book, too - expect an off the beaten path, non-standard hiking story, complete with excellent trail anecdotes, too!

Loved the AT adventure hike shared by these two sisters including the human parts when siblings can get too much of each other. I do not think I will read many AT hiking adventures done in severe winter weather. I was particularly impressed with their acceptance of all humanity, rationalizing kindly peoples differences without negative judgements. "Live and let live" sort of stance. They expressed and lived their belief that AT hikers are part of a community. Wonder what ever became of 'the family'. Amazing journey!

I have fallen in love with these sisters! I found the sequel even more enjoyable than the first book, and I loved the first book. I think the journey home is more relaxed and laid back - more blue blazing and zero days to enjoy the scenery and the people they meet along the way. I found it interesting to follow their side trips to Cullowhee (where I attended college), Cherokee (a town I am very familiar with), Florida, etc., and the great job they did of explaining how surreal it feels to make the transition from the wilderness to life in the "real world" and back. They are both excellent writers; the scenery and people come alive. I could almost feel Jackrabbit's lyme disease through the pages. I especially liked how honest they were about their relationship and how they didn't always get along so well along the way! I liked when they described the differences in the places going nobo as opposed to sobo. It was fun to see them embrace the traditions of the trail: Trail Days, the ice cream challenge, the Maryland challenge, and mooning the cog. I have hiked sections of the AT and have a collection of books written by thru-hikers, but these 2 books are my new favorites. I highly recommend this book!
