There is a reason for each book and some can offer very good reasons to be out there.This book has tons of information with photographs. Tons of demonstrations with step by step instructions from the blocking in to development of the whole painting.Tells of materials to use such as the names of supports to do the pastel work on. He tells and shows photographs of which pastels he uses in each demonstration, Instructs on basic techniques, and experimenting with other ideas such as how to prepare the pastel board for different effects. Tells how to make your own mahl stick with photo, and how, what, and when to use one.There is a wealth of information within the pages of "Painting in Pastels" that gets into all kind of different subject matter. Give it a try.It will help you with your motivation.

I have a read a range of books on the subject of pastel painting, and I feel this one is the most complete, and it’s the one who made me feel like experimenting the most. I particularly liked the close-ups, which allow for analysis of the marks used in the paintings.

This book provides excellent information for the artist interested in the medium of pastels. The writer gives extensive details on types of pastels , various tools that are useful but not necessary if starting out. He also gives detailed painting examples which provide great basic info about how to create them.

If you are beginning at pastels than this is a very good book for you. It has an escellent look into the basics while giving you some demos to help you understand those basics. As with most if not all professional painters, they all have their equipment that they love and use, but you have to decide what works right for you. Some papers and other items might not be for you, so you have to decide for yourself. All-in-all a top notch book that I would highly recommend for your pastel painting library.

Randomistas provides a collection of examples of randomized trials and experiments. The book desribes randomized experiments in medicine, business, and government programs – for improvements to prison programs, preventing scurvy on long sea voyages, encouraging philanthropy, and so on. Not only does it show that randomized tests are important, but it shows the surprising and unexpected – and often counter-intuitive – results.Randomized control trials, tests, and experiments are when researchers randomly allocate participants into two or more groups: one that gets the treatment or program (or different groups receive variations of the treatment or program), and another doesn’t. Leigh devotes time to the pioneers of randomized trials – the early randomistas – such as Charles Saunders Peirce in 1885 for psychology; Ronald Fisher in the 1920s for agriculture and biology; Austin Bradford Hill in 1946 for medicine (tuberculosis); and Judit Gueron in 1974 for social welfare policy.Leigh also responds to the criticism of randomized trials – too narrow, too expensive, too slow, unethical, not feasible, the world is too complex to isolate specific testing components, it’s not fair, and so on – and he discusses when randomized trials are effective and when they are not. For example, what is the value of placebo testing (pretending to provide treatment and the participant does not know of the pretence) and is it ethical? What is the value of conducting four kinds of criminal justice experiments: prevention, policing, punishment, and prison? Leigh also outlines how many randomized trials are currently being conducted daily by organizations, big and small, across the globe.Randomistas is a fascinating book about the wrongs and rights of randomized control trials, and their impacts in decision-making from what to buy to how to heal. From the simple to the complex, from fun to life-changing decisions, this book covers the gamut, and is a far from dry statistics: it is entertaining and educational and interesting.

This book was an incredible survey of a huge amount of material. The process of organizing it must have been a nightmare. That said, the unifying ideas and themes of each chapter are designed to help readers assimilate this pile of information, and I think it largely succeeds.In short, Randomistas is a book in favor of randomized studies as a path to provable truth or understanding the way things (and people) work in the real world.Randomistas uses both historical and modern examples, responding to potential objections where they naturally arise in the text. (It’s possible this could be a distraction to a reader who’s already convinced of the value of randomized trials, and there is a risk that the explanations in the midst of other, existing organizational topics (as each chapter tries to be) becomes yet another layer of complexity and shifting focus.)Which is a sassy way of saying some treatments of the various topics felt like long parentheses inside of parentheses. It appeared to be an organizational choice, and I wondered if it was in response to the type of reader who wouldn’t stick around long enough to get to the chapter on (say) ethics, and instead drop the book and miss out. Miss out on having their objections addressed, I mean. Leigh spends a lot of time reassuring the reader this can be an ethical and extremely effective methodology.Most people reading this will be familiar with the phrase, “There’s three kinds of falsehoods: lies, damn lies, and statistics.” In contrast, Leigh writes, “Sure, it’s possible to lie with statistics – but it’s even easier to lie without them.”And with the level of detail Leigh goes into – explaining how trials are set up, work, and are reported on – a diligent observer has a way in which they can dig into the solidity of any well-founded claim.For my part, I did not feel the same weight of ethical quandary in every scenario, and I appreciated Leigh’s effort to portray critics’ concerns without belittling them.This book is well-written. The illustrating stories and examples clarified the author’s points, and the energy was kept consistently high through the use of surprise and a good balance of (to me) both familiar and new studies. The inclusion of applications was also eye-opening, planting new ideas I hadn’t thought of before. (“Particularly in areas wracked by ethnic conflict, researchers now think that election debates [modeling a verbal, political, disagreement in public] may be a vital tool in encouraging a culture of disagreement over important issues without resorting to violence.”)Before ending the book, Leigh acknowledges the method’s limitations, and the rarity of dramatic discoveries, but he also lines out the way in which “anyone” could run a good randomized trial. It’s clear he believes in this tool, and by the time I was done reading his book, I did to.I think that’s the biggest compliment I can give it and him.(I received a free electronic copy of this book, but it did not shape the content of this review.)

The shoddy practices prevalent in social research are widely disdained. It's a real stretch to heroize a handful researchers for actually conducting their studies correctly. Trying to coin a strained cutesy hipster term for people finally doing their job just adds to the nonsense, and it places an intellectually fraudulent frame around the entire work. Somewhere underneath this steaming mess is an interesting set of study outcomes. The book may be informative if one can ignore the pretense and grandiose boasting of the author.

About the Author

Bob Lorentzen began writing and publishing in 1986 because the regional guidebooks people wanted were not being published. His four Hiker's hip pocket Guides have set a new standard of excellence for trail guides. He's been an active Coastwalk volunteer since 1987. Bob and his family love to explore new country and find new trails. He hiked nearly 300 miles on the CCT Whole Hike of 1996 and about 400 CCT miles researching Volume Two. Bob graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz with a degree in cCommunity Studies. This is Lorentzen's eighth book Richard Nichols has been Executive Director of Coastwalk since 1991, a Coastwalk volunteer since 1983. He led the CCT WHole Hike of 1996, walking almost 1200 miles from Oregon to Mexico in 112 days. He has worked on environmental issues in his home town of Sebastopol in rural western Sonoma County for 17 years, including instrumental work in wetlands preservation of the Laguna de Santa Rosa and other land issues.

This book is wonderful! I’ve been doing the CA Coastal Trail as day hikes with two friends. We definitely rely on this book. It is split up into easily doable day hikes with a map for each section showing access points and points of interest along the way. The descriptions of each walk are very detailed and I’m amazed at how little has changed since 2000. He also includes the history of all the different regions of the coast. This is definitely a great resource for walking the California coast.

The California Coast offers some spectacular scenery and parts of it, mostly north of the San Francisco Bay, offer some spectacular hiking. But the southern end of the California Coastal Trail, the state's "millenium trail" as the authors of this book constantly remind us, is more imagination than reality. Private property, the Diablo nuclear power plant, environmental restrictions upon camping, and the lack of any actual trail tread for miles upon miles of the coast means that much of the hike is along roads with no real legal place to camp. The first thru hikers, or "Whole Hikers" in 1996 did their trek with continuous automobile support driving them to and from the "trailhead" and motels and campgrounds. This is cost prohibitive for the vast majority of hikers who might imagine that they can plan a through hike on this trail the way they might on the Pacific Crest Trail or shorter cousins like the Tahoe Rim Trail.The bottom line then is that this "guide" to the trail in the southern part of California is most useful for day hikers who want a pleasant walk along the coast or in one of the nearby coastal ranges and who would like the further satisfaction of saying they have walked upon the largely unsigned California Coastal Trail. Even the segments it is broken into are not convenient for long term planning though they will mostly make for pleasant day hikes. (Some of the segments, however, are too long for this type of use.)The book does have some nice features including interesting sidebars on local history and accounts of various conservation battles along the coast. (Oil spills, we are told, are not good for the environment.) And every chapter, indeed virtually every segment within every chapter, includes the authors' suggestions for where the trail should be re-routed. That in and of itself is enough reason for me to recommend that you skip volume 2 (this volume) of this guide. If you need to do a through hike of the California Coast, Volume 1, now in its second edition, and covering the northern part of the state is much better. Until a trail is actually completed in the Southern part of the state, readers and hikers would be better served by John McKinney's 'California Coastal Parks.' The dayhikes he recommends along the coastline south of Monterey offer a much better recreational payoff for this highly developed region.

This book's content could be summed up in the phrase, hit the road. A California road atlas will provide most of the information offered in this book. The coastal trails, when present, parallel the Pacific Coast Highway, however, most of the "hiking" is walking on roads. Perhaps, the State of California will further develop a "Coastal Range" sojourn that would be detailed in a book such as this. Walking highways is not hiking.

I love the way that Arlow struggles to accept her dragons as they struggle to accept her.Her relationship with Aggie was a bit strange. The old woman may have "the sight" but she's a little too accepting and forgiving.The introduction of the concept of a new character at the end was a little abrupt.Having said this, I really enjoyed the book and I have already purchased the next one.

This book is ok. Koonce has amazing ideas for story and character but the execution feels rushed and stifled...there are so many parts in these books I want the story to really flush out and it doesn't. I think I'm just disappointed because this story could have been epic. I think it might be that Koonce really doesn't want to hurt her main character so at times takes the characters on the easy route opposed to the route that will really hook the reader. Will I continue reading? Yea... probably... should I?? Probably not.

The story would be nice, the characters could be nice. But this does not feel like a book. It feels like the bad sketch of one. All characters feel the same, and speak with the same voice. There's barely any description of what's happening. No references.Also loads of very basic grammar mistakes, typos and confusion.I struggled to finish it. And the writing style does not improve with time. A pity, cause the book would be nice with some rewriting

This is book 2 of the amazing series by A.K Koonce. You have Arlow and her amazing group of men. Arlow is a wonderful FMC who is sarcastic and a strong mage. Her men are 3 dragon shifters and a demon(hellhound). The whole book has steamy moments. This book is filled with some adventure and funny moments. It a must read!!!! I enjoyed every moment of this book and could not put it down.

Arlow is back with her dragons. On a mission to find Agatha and defeat the darkness from her past. Book 2 in the taming series.

A.K. Koonce has a poetic way of describing emotions as I feel like I'm emerged as one with the character.She also knows how to write PASSION - from heated glances and a stolen touch along the wrist. It makes me melt. And the actual sexy times are 🔥🔥🔥. Holy moly. This book does have some MM petting and MFM scenes. Very well written, as it's not crass or deemed erotic. Just very passionate.Now the reason for 4 stars instead if 5, and this is *my personal opinion.(Spoiler)....I feel like... the villain was VERY anti-climatic. He's been built up as this wicked, evil demon who has tortured the FMC and abused her. But we just get small tid-bits of her past. And after all that build-up of the FMC's terror in book 1, the villain turns out to have a very small part in the beginning and then again at the end...? And then the FMC kills him without getting answers!!?? I'm so confused, and I feel like it's a big enough plot hole that I had to reduce it a star. 🤷‍♀️ I never hated the villain demon - in fact, I was indifferent towards him. Why was I supposed to hate him? What was his role in this story? To drop a hint that our FMC is going to come up against an even bigger foe in the next book and that one of her dragons is tied to her?? Was it to force the FMC to grow into her powers and go on a journey of self-discovery? I just feel like I wasn't given enough answers - and the answers we were given weren't enough for me to hate this villain.End of spoilers...This is a really good series, and in this book we do get more character development of the men and more sexy times with our dragons... or are they wyvern's?? Hmmmmmm.

Oh my goodness I can't get enough of this series! Claiming, book two of the To Tame a Shifter series is even more exciting and steamy than the first.Not only is Arlow surrounded by three sexy dragon shifters, but her demon best friend who she though was gone is now back. With the help of these four guys and Prince Linden, Arlow sets out to find her evil ex Kreedence and rescue her friend Agatha and of course Bobble the fish.Claiming was such a fun read. We really get a deeper look at a lot of the characters, learning more about their pasts and how it affects their personalities. Arlow takes a closer look at herself and tries to let the guys in a little more despite being afraid of her emotions. I loved the dynamic between Chaos and Rime and Arlow's interactions with them *hellooooo steamy times ;p*. It was also really interesting to get a closer look at Linden and his parents, the King and the mysterious dead Queen.The end of this book was a doozy. While it doesn't end on a cliffhanger, I am very eager to get some explanations in book 3. One evil might be gone from Arlow's life, but it looks like another ominous presence might be lurking in the shadows.

Oh, and remember what you learned in high school biology. That's it - the entire message of this book, repeated in different ways over and over and over and over . . The authors have inflated a good but simple message with cutesy wisecracks and pretentious 'plans' into a 'book'.

We saw the authors of this book on the Dr. Oz show and were hoping that this would be a book that would provide follow up, easy to follow meal plans. We learned the basic philosophy that the authors subscribe to on Dr. Oz's show, so we were not needing to be schooled in that same information. Unfortunately, the majority of the book is devoted to their philosophy and what to do in exceptional circumstances. We looked through the entire book looking for a simple 30 day meal plan detailing what to eat for each meal with helpful recipes. None of that is provided.Don't waste your money on this confusing, frustrating book!!!

Interested in learning about "When to Eat" and how it affects health. Reading through the endorsements, I saw that doctors Sanjay Gupta and Mehmet Oz had written glowing endorsements. This was encouraging because they had both endorsed Dr. Mark Hyman's book "Food: What the Heck Should I Eat?" I had read and learned a lot about nutrition. However, I found that Dr. Roizen's 'what to eat' recommendations in this book are significantly different from Dr. Hyman's. Roizen says avoid or strictly limit red meat, eggs ( no yolks) and coconut oil while Hyman says pretty much the opposite.Two well known and respected doctors endorsing two books with very different approached to nutrition adds to the confusion and charlatanism associated with health/diet plans and makes me wonder if they all just get together and agree to support each other so that their respective books will sell.

I am SO disappointed in this book! It provides little new information, and, to me, is written in a paternalistic style.For example, eggs had been vilified, then brought back as a nutritional powerhouse, including the yolks. Now the authors say to have a most one egg yolk a week, without explaining the reasoning. We are just to accept it on their say so, without explanation, despite other highly respected MD's endorsing the whole egg. The authors seems to under-estimate the intelligence of their readers. I am back to just trying to eat the way that makes most sense to me, which is food the way it comes in nature, as the whole egg, ( not just the white) the whole apple, not applesauce, whole milk, real fruit and vegetable in their whole form, and so on. I am also disappointed at Dr. Oz's promotion as well. A waste of money for me.

My family has the "what" part down pretty well. The timing of food intake is an emerging body of science. The "when" part, as the authors acknowledge in sharing their personal experiences, it going to take adjustment. The book offers a plan for gradual changes. What makes this book different? References! The peer-reviewed journal articles are referenced in the book. I want the science to support making radical lifestyle changes. This isn't the opinion two admittedly engaging physicians, this is both new and old knowledge presented in an easy to read and reference format.I'm puzzled by the scattered poor reviews. Readers criticized the book for old information (mostly the "what" part) and ignored the important modifications of new information or criticized the book because it didn't meet their individual expectation of wanting a short term prescription of menus. This is about lifestyle. Please don't let those reviews mislead you. I'm going to recommend this book to my patients.

This book is just warmed over 90's advice given by old school doctors who can't get over how real people eat. Huge disappointment. All that's different is don't eat large when the sun is down. I really feel cheated!

This book is more than just another handbook for some trendy fad diet. It summarizes the latest research in an entertaining fashion and easy-to-read format on how to eat better and help people lose weight, without making drastic changes in their lives. It’s a much easier approach to stick with in the long term, so I think that’s why many people will find that this is something that is much more simple to follow for the rest of their lives rather than a drastic change for a few months (and then return back to their old eating habits).I see that one of the criticisms from others is that it’s a rather simple book that might point out obvious things... yet these are things that most people do not practice in their daily lives. So I think that there are lot of people who could benefit from the book. As a physician, I will definitely bring up these important eating recommendations to my patients in my OB/GYN practice.One of the best eating instruction books I have read in a long time. I highly recommend it.

As someone who has lived over seven decades, I wish I had had Dr. Roizen and Dr. Crupin’s book fifty years ago. At this point in life, knowing what to eat to relieve stress and to help me get to sleep is a big help. Had I known what to eat when hoping to bring the healthiest baby in to the world or when feeling many butterflies before a job interview, life might have been very much easier. And I am very glad for the advice of what to eat to lessen the chances of suffering from serious illnesses. Yes, I recommend this book with five stars! Marsha Lowry

. The book is second in the Left Behind Series by LaHaye and Jenkins. The series is based on a literal reading of the Book of Revelation in the New Testament. There is something exciting going on every five minutes. In the first book millions of people disappear, and the series follows the problems faced by those who are left behind. The main characters correctly guess the disappearances to be the Rapture, where Christ takes his faithful to heaven. After the Rapture there is a huge upswelling of interst in Christ, especially among the Jews, and thousands of conversions. But all this happens as Christians are coping with WWIII, a worldwide earthquake, dodging the Antichrist, and bringing people to Christ. I'm the opposite of a fundamentalist, but these are some of the most exciting and uplifting books I've ever read.

Excellent suspense and great characters lead the way for the sequel of Left Behind and I actually liked better than the first novel. This novel is for anyone that wants to read a great story regardless of spiritual beliefs.The world has been turned upside down by the rapture. Loved ones have vanished and people that are left are asking questions. For Rayford Steele and daughter Chloe and their new friend Cameron "Buck" Williams the answer is clear, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has taking their loved ones to be with Him in Heaven. And now they must survive the horrors that lie ahead. As the Tribulation force must is preparing to survive at any cost they must become face to face with the antichrist Nicolae Carpathia who is already put his plan into motion to rule the world. With the horrors to follow, World War III, disease and natural disasters our heroes are trying to stay ahead of the evil that is Nicolae. This novel does an excellent job of continuing to develop characters and keeping the pace fast and interesting and as I mentioned above is actually has a better pace than book one. This novel continues the relationship between Buck and Chloe which is fun and familiar to those who have been in love.Whether you are a Christian or not I highly recommend this novel and this series. If you are a believer you will find this conforting because you won't have to experience what is coming and what takes place in this novel. If you are still confused or a non believer, I beg you to read carefully and find the Truth. God Bless us all.Grade A+

I had all of the original 12, except for this book, the second in the series. First disappointment was the condition of the dust jacket; small tears in 2 or three places. The original series were 9 & 8/16ths” tall &6 & 6/ 16ths” wide. The book received was8 & 8/16ths” tall & 5 & 14/16ths” wide. So this book purchased was an inch shorter and a half inch shorter in width. Not acceptable.

This whole book series is well written and based on Biblical research and truth, making the fiction scenarios throughout the books very possible & even likely, in my opinion. Regardless if the reader sees the story as possibly happening in real life or not, it's hard to put down! When I first started the series right after "Left Behind" came out years ago, it was difficult to wait for the next one to be published! Both my daughters read them while in college and finished the series as fast as they could. Several friends of mine were reading the series around the same time as I did and we all traded books among us whenever possible. It was the hot topic of conversation whenever we got together. Now my second husband is reading them and could hardly wait for book 2 to arrive after I ordered it! It was a challenge for him to wait a couple days & not go buy it off the shelf someplace!! I had kept all my original books - except book 2, 3 & 5 were missing! Now my oldest daughter wants to start reading this series to her 2 kids when he is finished with the 1st 3 books...& so it goes!

Theologically the authors stay in tune with modern Evangelicals, but in my opinion even Christians from other churches can still derive a lot of pleasure and satisfaction from this moving saga. A great book on its own terms and a compelling lead-in to the next entry in the series, "Nicolae," which promises to be even more exciting. Highly recommended!

One clearly has to read this book in order to follow the story of the series. However, the book is not well written, with many pages taking up seemingly arbitrary story line, only to be followed by a rush job at the end to move the story along. One almost gets the impression of disjointed ghost writers being asked to do little bits which are included at the end. But the styles and story telling of these paragraphs vary from the main book - almost as if the plot is not quite clear.The oddities of the first book hand over here too - e.g. Trying to update the story line in the modern electronic age but not applying the update uniformly --> confusing!

I got this book shortly after having watched the first film. The movie really drew me in and I had to have it. Now, altogether, I think I like the film much better than the book, but the novel has its merits too without a doubt.I see a lot of reviews talking about how the characters were without personality, boring, unreadable, flat. In some ways I do understand the frustration. At times it's near impossible to read what is going on exactly, BUT I think I've found purpose to what so many deem madness. I mean, these are kids who woke up in a strange place with no memory of who they are, where they came from. To top it all off, they're trapped in a maze crawling with monsters at night. And no matter how much they try to escape, they can't. They have lived in a place with no idea of what they were, who they were supposed to be, or what they ARE supposed to be now. For me, it would only make sense for a stagnant environment to produce stagnation in the people occupying it. I know that may be reaching a little bit - but it's what has helped me to manage through the book with a peaked interest.I couldn't put the novel down. Overall, I find the concept of the story good. And despite the blank slates of many characters, they are still fairly likable (except for Alby. Book Alby worked my absolute last nerve. He was a complete 360 from his movie self and I have never hated a character so much so quickly. I disliked him more than Gally >:( ). All in all, the movie made me want to dive directly into The Scorch Trials, so it definitely did something right. Honestly, I think the biggest issue that most people can agree with is the lack of personality in the characters. But in my perspective, I can kind of make it work in my head! I look forward to continuing these books.

The Maze Runner? (Rolls eyes so hard she can see her brain) Meh, it was forgettable...and aggravating! In fact, I can distinctly remember the day-to-day struggle I had with the book! Days where I would dread the fact that I had to pick up The Maze Runner and suffer reading through the endless chapters that give you no answers, no purpose to The Maze, no clear objective, annoying and pointless characters that you feel no connection to, and hopelessness.Hmm, okay, have you ever played Monkey in the Middle? Well, imagine you are the monkey in the middle, you have Thomas (the lead character) on one end, and James Dashner (the author) on the other end. Okay, now imagine James Dashner holding a mysterious black velvet drawstring which holds all the answers you are dying to get your hands on. Okay, now picture Thomas and Dashner cackling as they toss the drawstring back and forth over your head. At first, you chuckle and say something like, "Oh, come on guys," then 30 chapters later, while they continue to play their silly game, you give up on the attempt to intercept the drawstring, and crossing your arms you say something like, "Okay, this is getting really annoying."Finally, after 60 chapters, you decide to walk up to Dashner and rashly kick him right on the chin and you shout, "ENOUGH!" And in your disgraceful moment of defeat and frustration, Dashner "thoughtfully" hands over the black velvet drawstring, so as to say, "All right, I'm sorry." You gasp, and then squeal, AT LAST! YOU HAVE THE ANSWERS! You fall to your knees and madly begin to open up the black velvet drawstring, "This is it! This is it!" you exclaim to yourself, only to uncover....complete and utter darkness; yep, nothing. The bag was empty the entire time.Then, as your gaze moves steadily up at Dashner, you take notice that he is frowning, and smiling, and laughing all while staring at Thomas, who is responding in the same manner. And then it hits you, they are able to converse telepathically! What in the world!? Argh!So you get up, take a deep breath, sweep whatever Dashner dust-bunnies have settled onto your jeans and shoulders, and begin to walk away from their wicked scheme; who needs those guys anyway? Rude! But just as you are storming off, Dashner runs up to you, laughing irritatingly while trying to catch his breath and says, "Okay, okay," his arms up in surrender, "I'm done, here take this, you'll want to read this," and just like that, he walks over to Thomas (who is laughing hysterically by the way), they pat themselves on the back, as to congratulate each other, and they walk away.You shake your head in utter confusion and look down at the single sheet of paper resting on the palm of your hand, you unfold it, it's an epilogue. The best darn thing Dashner wrote in the entire book!

This is a horror book filled with nastiness, lack of empathy, and most revoltingly, the idea that it's reasonable and morally correct to torture and kill children in the name of possibly saving the human race. I forced myself to finish it to see if the ending had any redeeming qualities---it does not. A "teaser" for the second book begins with a brother and sister kidnapped after watching the murder of their parents. Apparently many adults, including respected reviewers, can maintain enough emotional distance to enjoy this sort of thing, but I am not one of them. And I certainly do not regard this as appropriate for children, or even teenagers.

Most sets only have the 1st 3 books, it's nice this set has all 4 books. However this is NOT a Boxed set . This is a set of 4 books that are shrink wrapped together with a paper wrapper around the ends & back. It is not in a box, so the books are loose when the wrap is removed.
