Ubuntu!: An Inspiring Story About an African Tradition of Teamwork and Collaboration, by Bob Nelson

From Booklist

Ubuntu is an ancient African philosophy that we are all part of one human family and benefit from treating each other with civility and respect. Drawing on research and their own experiences, best-selling authors Lundin and Nelson offer a fictional account of the real-life application of Ubuntu to American business management. John Peterson, a new manager of a major multinational retailer, is struggling in his new position, failing to meet deadlines and to motivate his staff. His most productive employee, a young man from South Africa, introduces John to the concept of Ubuntu: managers must respect the value of every employee, and individuals must put the interest of the team foremost. Lest managers think the approach is too touchy-feely, they should know that Ubuntu requires respect for individuals, not sloppy work, and challenges those individuals who threaten the benefit of the team. The approach was used by Nelson Mandela to bring about reconciliation after apartheid and has gained advocates among managers of American sports teams and corporations as well. The authors include a blueprint for applying the principles of Ubuntu to workplace management. --Vanessa Bush

I've appreciated the concept and philosophy of Ubuntu for quite some time, and was looking for a good way to share this easily with others in business and community contexts. I am grateful to authors Lundin and Nelson for sharing Ubuntu in the form of a business fable that makes it easily accessible to readers at all levels. Just last week, one of my colleagues shared this philosophy in an inter-generational summer camp. You can read more here if you'd like to learn about one way to bring the concept to life:[...]Ubuntu is powerful for business teams and organizations, and for community building. I strongly recommend it.

Ubuntu is a concept that is new to me, and yet not new at all. The idea of interconnectedness is precisely what we should be pursuing on this planet. I was so moved by this book, that I wrote a poem about it, and continue to pursue the path of Ubuntu every day. I am living this concept at even a deeper level because I am a heart transplant candidate and have been overwhelmed by the people who have come forward to support me and my family out of pure love.UBUNTU through and through!

We purchased this because it is required reading for my son's incoming freshman class at his college. This is a fast read with wonderful insights and helpful pointers on how to treat humans. I highly recommend this book!

Bought for college, it is a quick read. A great, cute inspiring story. Something that everyone should read and try to live by.

Ubuntu! Is a book about community and working together with others, where you see each other as equals regardless of titles, corporate or social structures. Combining to achieve a common goal should unite everybody as they share the same goal. The main takeaway mimics and old acronym for TEAM: together everyone achieves more, but goes a lot deeper by explaining that the team is universal and is a human to human team rather than the isolated islands we find ourselves on, either professionally or personally. When people know about and care for each other the motivation to succeed and see them succeed grows exponentially

(Was also forced to read for freshman year of college)Though I don't like reading educational books, this one was a nice book to read and wasn't as boring as I thought it would be. It really is an inspiring about creating unity with the people around you.

Their was a few typos in the book but you could easily understand what was meant. I loved this books and the meaninof Ubuntu! It is very inspirational!

I ordered this book as a gift to someone interested in Ukraine. As soon as I got it, I flipped through it and was intrigued in reading it myself. The book provides great suggestions of things to do and places to visit, as well as nuanced insights into Ukrainian culture and contemporary life. It dives into details of gender roles, cultural norms, traditions, and common behavior. Maria is a great author that managed to share her personal experience in Ukraine in an accessible, candid, and engaging way. This is not a flashy tourist brochure loaded with exaggerated details and false claims. This is a guide to real Ukraine, which could save you a ticket or prepare you for your upcoming trip!

Excellent buy. Hard to find guide books of Ukraine based on user experience.

Fantastic, useful, short guide. Provides some interesting insights for expats for family and is well worth buying if you are headed to Ukraine.

Different from a traditional travel book more of a supplement. Not easy to find travel guides on the Ukraine so wanted to try this out. This is a quick read but has some solid tips. Based on the price I think it's worth the purchase.

Good one and some information "behind the scenes", written by someone actually lived in the country. Good info regarding Lviv and Kyiv, and also some general info regarding the country and the people.

Not a travel guide, but just good, clear observations and advice. Leaving for Ukraine in less than two weeks, and have learned some key information that I'm sure will help.

Not your typical tourist guide but very helpful in gettingto know the Ukrainian people and culture and getting me excited about my trip! The recommended hotels, theatres, restaurants, museums, etc offer the top choices in these categories.

Maria Kachmar's unabashed 'love letter' to Ukraine is a delightful read and a useful 'how to' for traveling in the country. Her enthusiasm for her ancestral homeland is clear, and is delivered in easy and engaging prose. Her unique position as a Western expat with a Ukrainian heritage (and language skills) mean that this little book is chock full of great suggestions for everything from museums to kid-friendly parks. I'm adding it to the list of recommended reading for our expats who will be moving to Kyiv in August. As a long-time resident of Kyiv myself, the book has been a great reminder of just how much the city has to offer, how much I still need to see, and how many places I need to go back to! Definitely recommended for anyone considering a long or short term visit to this remarkable country.

I was given this deck as a gift when I was nineteen, and used it daily (along with a couple other decks as well) for four or five years. I am now in my thirties, and never use it to do readings anymore (for everything, it's season), but glance at it fondly from time to time. A friend of mine is currently studying Jung, and very interested in archetypes, so I thought I would pass this deck along to her.Yeah, it's different than Jung, but it's possible to learn lessons from multiple sources. Some of the cards are on the weak side, but no deck is perfect. All in all using this deck was a big positive in my life. I've moved on from it, but it was a great and useful teaching tool for me.Each card lists a brief light aspect along with a shadow aspect (a positive and a negative), so if you are an experienced reader and intuitive you won't need the little book at all. I found it helpful to read the interpretations of archetypes from others as well, and you can locate plenty of that on the internet for free. The cards in this deck may depict some classic ingrained gender biases, such as Athlete is male, and Teacher is female, but overall this deck does not portray men in a negative light as was suggested by one reviewer. There are three male cards that can be viewed as being classically negative: Thief, Addict, and Martyr (although I don't personally view the martyr as negative overall as Jesus was martyred along with many others for their faith). There are seven female cards that can be viewed as being classically negative: Vampire, Saboteur, Gossip (two women on this card- double whammy!), Beggar, Prostitute, Femme Fatale, and Victim. Maybe begger isn't a negative, but I sort of see it that way. A lot of this is obviously going to change regarding your own interpretation. Both the Fool and Gambler cards are very gender ambiguous in my opinion, and can be viewed as being male or female. (I added pics) Student, Trickster, Shape-Shifter, and Messiah I also find gender ambiguous. The Warrior card to me appears as a male, but maybe the long hair makes some see this card as female?Three cards out of the 78 in this deck portray males "serving" females: Priest, Mentor, and Healer. I'm not sure how teaching, healing, or serving as a spiritual guide is negative...? Interestingly though, both the Slave and Servant card are depicted as female, but the reviewer pointing out the political gender biases failed to mention that. Actual female slaves and servants are apparently not noteworthy, but men serving women is a bee in the bonnet. Hmm.Four cards show both genders in the main role as archetype: Midas/ Miser, Monk/ Nun, Samaritan (some may see this card as two females, but one looks male to me), and Hero/ Heroine.Three cards do not include gender at all. Destroyer is a volcano, Bully is an angry cloud (don't argue that the cloud has a gender, please), and Pioneer is a lightbulb.Six cards in the deck are child cards. Nature, and Magical are female, Divine and Orphan are male, and Eternal and Wounded show both.Excluding cards that show both genders as archetype, are gender ambiguous, are not human, or are child cards there are nineteen cards with male illustrations, and thirty six with female illustrations. I can see how this might bother some sensitive users that can't stomach the idea of a world sans patriarchy, but everybody else probably won't even notice it.Another thing to remember is that ALL the cards have positive aspects. There are no true bad guys. This isn't Lord of the Rings with orcs and goblins, guys. Human beings are complex.Hopefully, looking at the pictures of the cards I added will help you decide if this deck may be useful to you, or it looks like utter rubbish. There are decks that I can't stand that friends of mine love, so you just never know with these things. Unless you can sort through them yourself in a store before buying, it can be really tough picking out a new deck. Hope this helps!

I love these cards, and especially love that the price is affordable. When they first came out they were $50. I use these cards as writing prompts. When I am doing writing practice, I pick a card and write a short story about an aspect of the card I have chosen. It works really well with fiction or nonfiction (about me). Then I end up with lots of pieces that can become a larger work. I think it will be part of a writing group that I am forming.

Alright, so these are fun cards. I use them in therapy groups as a way to think about archetypes and schemas and also ways patients present themselves (light/shadow attributes). These are sturdy, great art/colors, and are laminated. The set includes 74 archetypes and 6 blank cards. This is NOT a Tarot deck. However Caroline includes a guidebook with some ways to think about the cards and she has some related materials that might expand on ways the cards can be useful for self exploration or in supporting others' journeys.

Arrived on time as shown. I gave it two stars because honestly, it's my fault for thinking I could incorporate these in with my tarot readings. These would be great for...I don't know really, lol. They are made of very thick cardstock and have a waxy type coating so its hard to shuffle them and they are a boxy shape. I never use them and may just give them away to a therapist who may find better use for them.

The sheer amount of cards you get with this is astounding! Plus you get a few blank cards with the preset format but without description in order for you to add your OWN archetypes to the mix. It might be a challenge to come up with an archetype or two not already included in this massive deck though it's awesome just in case something comes to mind. The cards are made with professional card stock and aren't overly laminated or anything. I'd say they're well balanced there. They are larger though so you'll likely have to shuffle in the pull apart and drop method but that's a given anyway considering how gigantic the thickness of the deck is anyways with 80+ cards.

These are very attractive cards, nicely boxed, and thick and sturdy enough for frequent use. These are likely better used in conjunction with Myss's books, as you'll gleen more in-depth information about archetypes; however, a small, white booklet is included with this deck to get you started in identifying your twelve archetypes. There are also six blank cards included, which is a nice feature. I love these and am really pleased with this purchase!

These are very useful cards if you are tryng to identify which archetypes apply to you. The illustrations are beautiful, and the descriptions succinct. An accompanying booklet provides fuller descriptions of each archetype card. These cards pair well with Carolyn Myss' Sacred Contracts book and her Archetypes CD set.

I love these cards! I study character archetypes and these cards are so much better than anything else I've come across. I really love them and whenever I need a jolt out of writer's block, I shuffle and throw in the card I get.

I had never even heard of this boo before taking the Hillsdale course on C.S. Lewis. It is small - not much more than pamphlet size - so I thought I would read it before bedtime. One week later, I am still enjoying (savoring) each sentence and do believe it will be finished tomorrow. When it is, I shall wait a week - then read it again.C.S.Lewis has always been an easy read for me. Each paragraph in 'The Abolition of Man' causes me to stop and think - and solidify my thought before I go on. It is a magnificent polemic that has made me recognize and review much of my culture I took for granted. Some trends that Lewis has pointed out to me, I now knowingly embrace - others, I carefully reject.I would recommend this book to anyone!

Post-Modernism is like a copper nail in an oak tree. Eventually it poisons the tree and the oak dies. Thinking that good and evil have no relevancy to life destroys a culture and leaves it barren. That is the direction we are heading in. We are authors of our own destruction by believing that good and evil are subjective and not real. This poisoning has been going on so long that it takes on the qualities of a cancer. The body never battles cancer because it does not recognize it as a disease. The cancer then metastases and kills the body. This book was written more than 80 years ago, and yet analyzes our current condition. When truth no longer seems available, we seek something like it out. Why do you think young people are drawn to radical Islam? Read this book before your eyes are sown shut by skeptical, self centered, and mean spirited elitists disguised as social leaders.

C.S. Lewis was a very wise man. He wrote "The Chronicles of Narnia", all seven!!He also wrote books that make you stop and THINK, such as "The Abolition of MAN."If you stop and think, you will become a wise human. If you read this book, your mind will lead you to get "The Problem of Pain."And on and on through all of Professor Lewis's books (There is even a list in the front of any of his books)

Without a doubt, CS Lewis is one of the greatest minds of the last two centuries. The Abolition of Man provides a sobering look at modernism which, in turn, provides an even harsher indictment of postmodernism and its inherent moral relativism. Since everything in this book is antithetical to what's being taught in public schools and universities today, I suppose it's futile to say that this one should be required reading. I will leave it simply that Lewis can fairly be referred to as the Mozart of critical thinking and apologia. I cannot recommend this short but profound read highly enough!

I've read this book several times now. This is a must have in order to understand Lewis and the surrounding culture in which he writes. It's certainly not as theological as the other writings, but you learn some great insights into the broader liberalization of our culture.

C.S. Lewis herewith provides us the quintessential "older experienced man talking to younger men" about things and attitudes that they will need to culture in themselves to be wise with their life. He covers important and courageous topics like how to "stand alone", why to study in times of war, politics from a Godly view, how to determine God's truth, etc. These are teachings that this millennial generation needs sorely due to the failures of our current educational systems which have become only propaganda tools.

Very thought provoking, philosophical discussion of where mankind, especially western culture, could be heading: is it over the proverbial cliff? Worth reading twice, in order to get the full impact.

Do you feel like the values of our world are actively being rewritten and engineered by the media and popular science? If so, you're in the same boat as C.S. Lewis was in the 1950s.In this book, C.S. Lewis makes an argument for objective morality and objective qualitative truth in general. He argues that by rationalizing away objective value, we undermine our own humanity and become a world of two classes: the shapers and the shaped.

This had been a gift to me many years ago, and it began my interest in origami. So I ordered 3 of them for folks to whom I will be teaching beginning origami. I figured the special paper would be a plus for my "students", although I also ordered some plain 6" kami for them to practice with. (I think ordinary Kami is most helpful for beginners, to let them see the folds and creases more easily.) The book has a nice variety of easy to more difficult projects, and has the usual 'prep' -- how to fold the various folds and bases. The directions are pretty good, and there's a nice variety of subjects. I'm no professional by any means, and there's a couple items I still can't do, but it's fun to push the envelope, and maybe my 'students' will teach me -- origami after all is a community thing. It's a fun book that you can go back to again and again to make some favorite things and to keep trying to master the rest of them. And, the papers that relate to the various projects are nice, and they are easily removed. This is a nice basic book.

Cute book of designs, good for beginners. There is paper included that you can rip out of the book, but it is so thick and so shiny, it just does not work. The papers are more glossy than the pages of magazines, and so thick they're nearly card stock - impossible to get good, sharp folds. The instructions are a little hard to follow as well. Watching videos is much easier for me than using a book like this. However, the book is very thorough, the paper really is beautiful, so it probably does deserve five stars.

I absolutely love this book. I'm teaching myself the art of origami and I find the bulk of selections to be a bit common. Then I stumbled across this book and was overjoyed by the unique twists on the usual patterns presented in so many other books. The sinking ship is cool, as well as the inflatable goldfish and business reply card chair to name a few. You will find traditional patterns as well, but what sets them apart are the included sheets of paper. Gorgeous patterns with most designed specifically for these unusual patterns.

This was a gift idea for young kids.It was loved by all ages and sexes.Include the 500 pack paper to make it usable immediately.

My kids (4 and 6 years old) love this book very much. We pick some to work on every day and they love to share what they made with their friends. They can follow the graphic instructions in book with a little help from me although my 4 year-old cannot read yet. They learn fast from the book and they feel proud of themselves when they teach other kids to do the origami. They love the origami paper coming with the book and they also like to make it from other color paper and decorate it in their own way. It is a place where they can really use their imaginations and be creative.

Great book. My daughter is able to follow the instructions and is having a lot of fun

Great book for beginners and experienced origami lovers.

Love it....lots of new things to do

Barons of the Sea: And Their Race to Build the World's Fastest Clipper Ship, by Steven Ujifusa

Review

“Full of remarkable characters and incredible stories, Steven Ujifusa’s Barons of the Sea is a fascinating, fast-paced history of America’s clipper ship era. Highly recommended.”  — Nathaniel Philbrick, National Book Award-winning author of In the Heart of the Sea“Fast-paced and entrancing... recounting freak storms, improbable romances, and mutinies on the high seas.... Ujifusa tells these stories with the verve of a natural dramatist.... Masterfully done.” — The Christian Science Monitor“Barons of the Sea is a riveting, raucous book. If you love the sea, it’s all here: dreams, money, ambition, and competition.”  — Jay Winik, bestselling author of April 1865  “Barons of the Sea moves as fast as a clipper ship at full sail. With a seemingly effortless command of the shared history of China and the United States in the nineteenth century, Ujifusa takes the reader on a rare and intoxicating journey back in time.”  — Candice Millard, bestselling author of Hero of the Empire  “Ujifusa has produced a carefully researched, lovingly written tribute to a now-vanished breed of ships and people, an entertaining chronicle of a few heady years when vision, speed, and daring helped the United States begin to establish its leading role on the world stage.” — Foreign Policy“Among the pleasures of Barons of the Sea is the author’s extensive knowledge of ship design and nautical history; the book is almost a beginner’s manual in sailing and is infused by a clear love for the regal triple-masters of the past.... The ships themselves, rather than the owners and captains, become the main characters.” — The Wall Street Journal“As learned as it is entertaining. Ujifusa has brought the golden age of American maritime commerce to vivid life. Extraordinary people and the wondrous clipper ships they built fill its pages with both great stories and deep insight into what makes humans of any age tick.” — John Steele Gordon, author of An Empire of Wealth“Barons of the Sea is a true adventure story. It’s got everything — wars, races, treasure and shipwrecks… You might drink a cup of tea with more reverence after reading this.” —  The Bowery Boys “Barons of the Sea has the... narrative ease of a novel. Occasionally funny and always richly detailed, this book paints a comprehensive portrait of an American era all but forgotten in the days of next-day delivery.” — Sail Magazine“This crisply told story of the race to build the fastest ship in the world reads like a thriller, reminiscent of the best of Nathanial Philbrick’s sea writing. It carries the reader along like a precious cargo on the high seas. I simply could not put it down.” — Admiral James Stavridis, Chairman of the US Naval Institute and former Supreme Allied Commander at NATO

Steven Ujifusa's brilliant book describes how a small fraternity of American shipbuilders, sailors, and trade merchants in the mid-19th century created a new class of fast wooden ships under sail -- clippers -- that helped build the young United States into one of the great powers of the world. Speed meant money when it came to transporting goods to and from China -- and those started with opium and tea. Americans weren't the only ones in the drug trade, which led to the Opium Wars between Britain and the Celestial Kingdom, but yes, opium was part of what made families like those of Warren Delano II, grandfather of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, great names and pillars of wealth and society in New York -- along with others like the Lows, the Grinnells, and the Minturns, and the Forbeses in Boston, and the Browns in Providence. The opium trade, FDR's grandfather maintained, was "fair, honorable, and legitimate," though it later faded in importance. The clippers themselves grew bigger and bigger, for bigger meant faster as they turned to even longer voyages around Cape Horn to California in the gold rush. Ultimately, the Boston shipbuilder Donald McKay's four-masted "Great Republic" displaced 4,555 tons, 335 feet from stem to stern when it was launched in New York in 1853 -- and then was nearly consumed by a fire in port. Transcontinental railroads and steamships displaced the clippers themselves a couple of decades later. This book shows how Americans went to China to make their way in Canton, how they survived in seas that could bring out the worst as well as the best in some of them, and how they built and paid for the clippers. By the time you finish, you'll know the difference between a futtock and a keelson, and fore, main, and mizzen topgallant sails, and you'll even have a pretty good idea of how it feels to be on deck while making 18 knots or more.

A fascinating forgotten world where fortunes were made and lost and led to he creation of powerful families whose exploits and investments shaped the US of today. This is a masterly presentation of the US in the early 19th century and the men who, desperate for wealth, clawed it from the sea. I tend to think of the US early in the 19th century as an inward-looking and not very worldly country. The eccentric New Englanders who built the China trade and became adoptive of sons of the richest man in China explode that vision of the of early US. Their beautiful fast sailing ships made their money, and shaped their lives. Single young American men who wanted to be rich dared life in mysterious China to reap the benefits of selling tea, silks, perfumes, and art back in the US--and selling opium, smuggled from Turkey and India, to China, devastated the country with the creation of addicts who destroyed their families with their craving for the drug. Imported opium in many forms of patent medicine addicted Americans, too, including many women who were socially approved for decades in their consumption of opium-laced laced health health postion. The life in China in the "foreign devils'" ghetto where Englishmen and Americans made their enormously profitable deals, was an entirely male society with plenty of risks.. Traders invested their earnings from the trade in new railroads and new factories or lost them lost in economic crashes. One trader, Warren Delano, made rich and comfortable by the trade and lost nearly everything in financial panics. At 50, he confessed to his wife that he needed to return to China to recoup his fortune. "Don't worry," he told her, "I promise to return in two years." In the 20th century, his grandson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt , powered in part by wealth from the opium trade, became President of the United States. Ujifusa's book brings the world of the clipper ships to life, the competition, the victories, the innovations, the avidity for money--the dynamism and the shames of the time--brilliantly to life.

This marvelous book is filled with fascinating stories, large personalities and lovely descriptions of clipper ships and what made them go fast in the water (complete with clear diagrams of hulls, masts and sails). The narrative moves easily from New England, to New York, to Canton, China, in the period of the Opium Wars in the first half of the 19th Century. The author vividly captures the sights, sounds and smells of Canton--bushels of dead bugs shoveled off ships before a cargo of tea was loaded and the ships sailed out, the damage to the Cantonese populace from the opium the ships had brought in, and the Pearl River "flower boats" (floating brothels) frequented by the Western merchant traders. Clipper ships later went around Cape Horn during the California Gold Rush, and Ujifusa tells us why some made money and some didn't.Warren Delano figures prominently in the book. His grandson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, became President in the next century. Delano made his fortune by going to Canton at age 24, and later settled with his family on an estate on the Hudson River. But he went bankrupt in the Panic of 1857. So in 1859, at age 50, he left his wife and six children behind to sail again to Canton to earn back his fortune. His daughter Sara, later FDR's mother, was then just five. In telling the story of Warren Delano, Ujifusa gives us the best description of New England Yankees I have ever read.Ujifusa also deftly captures, in quick takes, much about America in the age just before, during, and after Andrew Jackson: the burgeoning capitalist economy, the changing social customs, even the architecture of New York where the steeple of Trinity Church downtown was the tallest structure in the city. One learns a lot, and very enjoyably, in reading this fine book.

Review

“John does a masterful job of illuminating the qualities that business buyers look for in a company, and he does it in a thoroughly enjoyable and engaging manner.”—Bo Burlingham, author of Small Giants (from the Foreword)“There is no tooth fairy for selling a business. It takes planning and a real understanding of what works. I bet you’ll find yourself (like me) recommending this book to your friends who want to sell their businesses one day but don’t understand what that’s going to take.”—Seth Godin, author of Linchpin

I have a strong bias against business fables. I generally don't read them and don't put much stock into what I term "business fiction."In BUILT TO SELL, however, John Warrilow draws on his personal experience in starting and selling four companies to craft an entertaining primer. The "story" of Alex Stapleton and his marketing company compose most of the book. Frustrated, Alex decides to sell the company, and while discussing his lot with mentor Ted, he discovers (as many entrepreneurs do) that he has nothing to sell. To paraphrase Michael Gerber, THE E-MYTH REVISITED, Alex really has a job with a lunatic for a boss.Through Ted's tips and coaching Alex eventually builds a business he can sell. The lessons Alex learns apply to anyone who owns a business.Specialize, don't generalizeCreate a scalable product or service that is teachable, valuable and repeatableDon't concentrate more than 15% with one customerThe business can't rely on you, the ownerThere are 35 wonderful pages that follow the fable, the Implementation Guide and Ted's Tips, highlighted and standing alone.Since reading Warrilow's book...in one day...I have recommended or purchased it for a number of my customers and business colleagues.

This book is a great teaching book that is an eye opener for someone building or thinking about building a business with the intent to sell it. Actually, my favorite part is that the fictional business in the book was run as a service company that was NOT ready to be sold, and they did the work to transform it into a product company that would fetch the most money. Not only does it very effectively demonstrate what to do VS what you shouldn't do, it shows that you can always implement these types of changes to make sure you're more prepared to sell and at the same time make your company more successful.I also really enjoyed the way it was written, it was WAY more engaging and relatable than one of those books that just goes on and on about A-Z steps to take for your business. This actually sunk in, and showed real life application and advice all while in a fictional story! A must read for anyone looking to build a company and sell it.

This book is simply outstanding! If you own a business, no matter what size, this book is an excellent read. Truly eye opening to me!!It is super important to think strategically and start planning early for your exit. If your exit strategy is to liquidate assets and close up shop, then you don’t really need to read this book. However, if you want to sell your business and not just close your doors, then you’ve got to craft a plan and start early!!Some key take always:If you intend to put your business up for sale or position it to be acquired someday, you CAN NOT be the sole reason for the success of your business! If the success or failure is strictly dependent upon you and/or your partner working with your customers, then your sales multiple will be strongly discounted and you will earn a lot less at closing than is possible!! You need a strong management and sales team in place and you need a system for getting things done that is NOT reliant on YOU personally. You need to develop a specialty - being a jack of all trades, but master of none is NOT a recipe for success! You really need to read this book! It's an easy read...very engaging and easy to understand. Written in a very conversational tone and just makes SENSE!

An excellent business book that’s both fun to read and full of valuable insights. Whereas other business books are laden with jargon and often unattainable examples, “Built to Sell” is a practical and relatable read on how to grow (and sell) a successful service business. Part of what makes it so accessible is that the story is told in a narrative format, making it easy to follow and apply. The fictional story follows Alex, who runs a marketing design firm that he decides he wants to sell. Alex seeks advice from his friend Ted, a serial entrepreneur with a few successful exits under his belt. Through their weekly conversations, Ted asks pointed questions to understand Alex’s business and his motivations to sell. Each chapter is then built around what’s happening in the business (ex: a lucrative client that soaks up all of Alex and his team’s capacity), Ted’s advice on how to solve the problem, and then Alex implementing said advice and making progress on turning around his business and transforming it into something much more valuable. There are numerous lessons that Ted uses to lead Alex to a successful sale. All are valuable, but all are tethered to creating a standard offering and process that’s easy to control, price, and sell. In Alex’s case, it’s a 5-step logo design process that he offers and delivers to clients. It helps Alex to specialize his business which makes it easier to standardize his sales process, which leads to more recurring revenue, and align his company’s resources (e.g., staffing, internal operating model). It’s a effectively a system for turning services into products.

This would be quite useful to a lay person wanting to learn a little medical terminology. It provides a good breakdown of medical terms, their Latin and Greek origins, their meanings and their uses. There are helpful sections for acronyms, homonyms and eponyms. All in all, a handy tool. The reason for 3 stars and not 5 is twofold: 1) the general usage and grammar of the whole book sound like the author's first language may not be English (or British, as he refers to the language.) The book could have been so much better with some serious editing; 2) there is an identical book by a different author (Adam Brown) complete with awkward grammar and usage on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/Medical-Terminology-Beginners-Breakdown-Simplified-ebook/product-reviews/B01J7BCKIM/ref=cm_cr_dp_d_hist_1?ie=UTF8&filterByStar=one_star&reviewerType=avp_only_reviews#reviews-filter-bar

This book is incredible! Very well written and it has helped me study for my nursing exam. It is extremely easy to find what I need in the book and the author is very knowledgeable about this subject. Thank you so much Mr Miller I will be recommending this to my friends!

There's literally a bottomless pit of information. You dive in and it just keeps going and going. Everything you need to know about medical terms all in one organized place! Thanks for taking the time!

I recieved this book for free as a promotion. This book does go over medical terms but it does not break down all of the terms. It's a good book if you just need an overview of some medical terms.

Doesn’t have enough of information and it’s really small.

I got this book to help my daughter in nursing school. It is easy to use nd great for beginners. I am so glad I got it for her.

Simple to read. The Author isn't getting too deep in anything. Very general kind of guide. Useful for general knowledge and maybe beginner medics.

Thank you for a wonderful book. I will do well with it. Thank you.

Fifteen-year-old Jess and her family have left their home in Montgomery, Alabama, and are driving to California, with the plan to arrive before the Rapture. Along the way, they are committed to saving as many souls as they can—Jess' father wants her and her older sister, Elise, to hand out as many tracts as they can every time they stop at gas stations, fast food restaurants, motels, and the occasional casino. Despite the special and sacred nature of their pilgrimage, this car trip is like one many families experience—Jess and Elise squabble over space in the backseat, their long-suffering mother just wants to read and relax in peace, and their father refuses to use a GPS because he doesn't like machines to tell him what to do.Other than their father, it doesn't appear that anyone in their family truly believes that the Rapture will actually happen. Elise, who is secretly pregnant, hopes in many ways that it does come, so she won't have to live with the disclosure of her secret. And Jess isn't sure what she believes, about being saved, or anything else for that matter."That was my problem—I had no imagination—I couldn't imagine anything other than what I knew. The way time functioned, for example. Minutes. Waiting. How long a day could be. My biggest fear was that things would go on forever and there would never be any end. The idea of forever terrified me, even if we were in heaven and everything was great there."As her family makes their way across the country, Jess confronts her insecurity with her looks and her body, and her simultaneous envy and relief that guys stare at Elise and not her. She desperately wants something to happen in her life—she wants more meaningful friendships, she wants to fall in love—but in her heart she knows she might not be as ready for these things as she thinks she is. She says, "I didn't know how I could want things so badly while making it impossible to ever get them."Jess also watches as her parents struggle with their own relationship, with their father's inability to hold a job, their fears about money, and with Elise's erratic behavior. They also struggle with the question of whether the trip will ultimately end in the Rapture, and what will become of their lives if it doesn't occur. Elise can't face the reality of her situation, and isn't sure whether she should keep using her looks to get her the attention she craves. Jess wants things in her family, and their relationships, to remain the same."If I wasn't the good daughter, I wouldn't know what I was. I wasn't popular or a cheerleader or a straight A student. ... There were so many things I wasn't that I had difficulty defining myself, especially in relation to Elise, who was so many things."Mary Miller really told an interesting story, and I found both Jess and Elise's characters to be very dynamic—you knew there was more about them than you first saw. I wasn't sure where the plot would go, and I like the way that Miller ended things, but I thought this was a compelling exploration of how you learn to trust what you know rather than what you're told, and how complicated it can be to find yourself and become comfortable with who you are. This was a really quick read; I read nearly the entire book in about a day.

I would have to agree with some other reviewers that this book is only fair. It's a story of a sad family trapped in a car while the father pretends they are driving to California to witness the end of the world. There are occasional moments where it seems like something might really happen, but they don't last. I think the author meant for it to be a coming-of-age story in which the younger sister finds her identity. But it doesn't really work, because everything is so superficial. In the end, a few things happen which could have meaning, but they are merely described in a sentence. There is no depth, and it just can't compare with all the good to excellent coming-of-age stories which have been written over the last few generations. Much of the time, the reader is as bored as a teenager would be driving many miles with their dull family.

I'm not usually a fan of minimalist literature but Mary Miller's stuff is good, transcendent in fact. She makes the simple complex, the mundane interesting, and the just plain dumb seem intelligent and she manages all this with a wry humor. I liked what I read despite knowing from the get go that California's days would roll on. Brava! Well done. Read it you'll get something good.

Superbly written first novel about two teenage daughters road tripping from Alabama to California with their evangelical parents three days before End Times are predicted. The writing is fresh, crisp and real. The plot and pacing are perfect. The characters are flawed but loveable. Just a terrific read.

Brilliant writing by this wonderful young writer from the South. There is no end to the fabulous stories that these southern folks can tell, and tell so beautifully. This is an easy read and the characters are so well developed.

When I read the reviews for The Last Days of California, I expected a coming-of-age story, but to reduce this clever, sometimes dark and often tender novel to a 'coming-of-age' story, is to do it a disservice. In Jess and her apocalypse-hungry parents and just-pregnant prettier sister Elise, Mary Miller slyly reminds us of the keen appetites and yearnings we all share -- for love, for adulation, for the whole array of American fast food, for money, for sex, for salvation, and even for damnation. On their road trip from Montgomery to destinations west, in what their father is convinced are the last days before the rapture, Jess and Elise travel their own backseat journey. But their compass points toward adventure, not the end times. Yes, there are comic and sexual episodes. And yes, there are mishaps, flat tires, swindles, a flea market, a casino--and death--along the way.But the plot is only one pleasure. Seeing life via Jess holds as many satisfactions. Because they're in high school, Jess and Elise waver between youth and adulthood. They share a hotel bed like small children, where Jess notes, Elise was "so close that she could only look into one of my eyes at a time." Jess is a fond younger sister, who doesn't want to go to heaven if Elise won't be there -- she'd rather chance a post-Armageddon earth overrun with criminals intent on stealing their food and guns. Jess ruminates that Elise, "was the only skinny one, and I was glad for it because I didn't want our whole family to be overweight--it would seem like a fundamental flaw, like something we'd never overcome." Under a bleach-scented motel sheet she recalls a tv show about pests. "The family with bedbugs had closed them up in a suitcase and carried them home from a motel just like this one. The bugs were hard and adapted to survive, moving up and down the stairs on the children's stuffed animals." And she's a casual but cunning observer. Of her parents: "My mother put a hand on the back of his neck and told him he was doing a good job, which she did when he was doing a bad job." And of her mother: "She seemed like a nice person, doing all the nice things nice people did....but when one of her best friends died, she hadn't even seemed sad about it."The real destination in this utterly satisfying story is nowhere near California—it’s an interior journey, and you'll be richly rewarded if you ride there with Jess.
