This book is informative but very poorly edited. I believe it was written in another language and then translated into english but still has many misspelled words. Bounces around throughout time a lot also. Very hard read. Don't recommend it. Makes me wonder if those critics who give it praises actually read it or just wrote something.

"Zooming out is one of the worst habits of an oversimplifying media. We see presidents, kings and warlords on our screens, alongside maps and flags, but seldom the people in all their diversity."This book isn't a neutral account - it's from the side of the revolutionaries, critical of both jihadist extremism and the way the US (both Obama and Trump administrations) and other Western powers managed, or mismanaged, their intervention. The situation is not black and white. There are a lot of complicated elements at play and so it might take a few reads of some parts to fully get what's going on and form your own view, or at least accept that maybe you can't fully form a view because you aren't there. But that's the point of it - it's from the perspective of those at the local level in all their complications. There are thoughts most American readers probably haven't considered. At the end what can certainly be recognized is the many civilians whose lives have been altered, damaged or lost. I recommend checking this book out.

...is a slogan written on the walls of buildings in Syria to strike fear into its people. If you cannot imagine the leader of your country saying this to you, then you are among the lucky. The authors of this book, both Syrians, hold to account everyone who has interfered with and burned their country, whether regime, extremist opposition, or outside players. They write with clarity, passion, and first-hand knowledge, and anyone looking for context and background on the conflict should read this book. It broke my heart but I could not - and will not - put it down. Now more than ever, it is a must for anyone learning about or invested in the future of Syria and its freedom from the savagery and impunity that has plagued it for decades. If you feel you can't help in a concrete way but you want to do something, then please read and share this important book.

I have the previous edition. This book covers the origins and development of the Syrian Revolution, with a focus on what was happening on the ground, although it does talk about international politics too. I didn't notice too many editing problems (re: the other review). It's very important that books like these, and the facts therein, are spread far and wide. We must make sure history is not forgotten or rewritten.

Leila al-Shami and Robin Yassin-Kassab have written a vivid account of the struggle in Syria, from the mouths of Syrians themselves. All bias aside, how did this situation develop? Who are the actors and major players? How is this affecting ordinary Syrians? Who is among the opposition to Bashar al-Assad? These answers and more are featured in this very important book. Highly recommended!

This is a real representation of what's going on in Syria from a real Syrian. Stop looking through the plethora of op-eds and think pieces, and get your information from the source.

This book does an excellent job in shifting away from the grand narratives that one usually hears surrounding the Syrian war and focuses instead on the accounts of Syrians on the ground. It convincingly shows how the Syrian revolution started as a genuine uprising seeking dignity and democracy against a totalitarian dictatorship but the courageous revolutionaries were abandoned by the world as the regime employed a scorched earth strategy whilst enjoying unflinching support from its primary backers; Iran and Russia. Such a situation inevitably empowered the extremists and led to the crushing of the revolution and destruction of the country. Ultimately, it's a heartbreaking story but nonetheless it clearly explains how the catastrophic situation in Syria came to be as it is today.
