I purchased this book from Amazon, without being able to view any of the pictures inside. The title led me to believe my daughter would be searching for letters amid a jumble of other pictures, (like a "Where's Waldo" for the alphabet!) but sadly, that is not the case. Each page features only two jumbo-sized letters, and the rhyming prose discusses the designs or patterns featured on the letters. This is NOT a book that requires your little one to play "I spy" or to hunt for letters. This is just another book about letters for parents to read to their kids. While there's certainly nothing wrong with reading books to children, I feel this book is purposefully deceptive in its marketing. Thus, the low rating.
This book is absolutely not as described. It is not in any capacity a "search and find" book, but more of a "point and see" as is shown in the pictures; nor does it include any of the beautiful photography that is typical of I Spy books. In fact, I was seriously disappointed by the graphics, there's not exactly anything wrong with them but they are certainly not at the caliber I would expect from a Walter Wick I Spy book. The other major issue I have is the fact that it is advertised as being for the 3-5 year old age level. When I pulled this out of the box and handed it to my 3 year old, she looked through it and told me that I had accidentally given her a book that's actually for her brother (he's one). She said "sorry mom, this is actually just a baby book". Based on the advertising, this book is intended to entertain her for the next two years? After looking at it myself I realized she was right- at the cognitive level this book is designed for a 1 year old, maybe two year old. The paperback format though means that I can't even give this book to my one year old son, as he would tear it apart in less than five minutes. All in all, this book just did not meet my expectations for the description, the quality, age rating or the practicality.
Bought (and received) this book new. It's a little on the "simple" side. Being that it's a paper back instead of board book, I was assuming it would be a little more challenging. I have a 4 yr old and it was simple for her, but she did still enjoy it as a new book. We got this for a friend. If I were purchase these in the future I will find one more challenging. Each page has about 4 lines, stating what to find. By looking at the cover, I thought that might be what each page looks like, but instead, each pages only has about 8 pictures. It's as if looking at the front cover, they took the "A" and the few pictures around it and used that for one page. So in essence, the front page represents more like 9 pages from the book.It looks like a great book, just not as advanced as I was hoping. This would be better for my younger daughter!
This book cover is deceiving. We are huge Walter Wick fans in this household; we love the detailed pictures he takes that require true hunting for a variety of objects. There is no hunting of any kind in this book. My 3 year old was quickly bored. I wish I had looked at the reviews prior to purchasing but I was in a rush to get a book to use as a time passer for a car trip.
I was very disappointed in this book. While I knew it would be a little easier than the typical I Spy books, I expected it to be a little engaging. Each page would have two giant letters and one or two little objects. Can you find the A? Yes. If you can open the book, you can find it. My 2-year-old was bored.
I purchased this book, along with several others, for my granddaughter, age 2 years 5 months. I have been helping her "read" this series of books since she was 18 months old. She just loves them and are her most favorite books. For a very young toddler, she is squeamish with pictures that represent a dark concept. I have decided to hold this book aside for about 6 months and then see if she can handle it at that time. Overall, we love this series of books.
My grandson loved this book from the moment I first gave it to him. At three years old, he has learned to read with the help of this book.He loves the game of searching for missing items. Given a small looking glass, he checks out all the details of every picture. After this, he goes over the words on the pages and the clues of finding rhyming words, etc. It's one of the few books out of hundreds I have for him that he requests over and over again!
Wonderful book! My 2 year old daughter adores I Spy books. She really finds these books entertaining! She will sit with me and ready "I Spy ...." And find the objects listed. I Spy books have helped her with object recognition. She will look around the room now and say "I Spy a red book" to play games with me! She started reading I Spy when she was a little younger than 2!
