Kaczynski's critique of modern industrial society is brilliant on many fronts, although I find his solution to the problem appallingly utopian and simple minded. Ted asks the question "why are people so miserable in industrial society?" and he comes to many conclusions. One is that we are caught up in what he calls "surrogate activities", which are something like activities "just for the sake of doing something" rather than, say, doing something because we need to in order to survive. An example would be that instead of hunting or fishing in order to be able to eat, we play video games where we hunt and fish just because we have nothing else to do. In other words, we are so saturated with material wealth that we are dying of boredom and therefore waste our time on trivial nonsense.Another issue is that we don't have the ability to go through what he calls "The Power Process". TPP is Ted's term for a psychological need in us to have goals, work towards those goals, achieve them at a reasonable rate, and do so with autonomy. In industrial society much of what we have is so easy to get that we hardly have to work towards them (hence why we engage in so many surrogate activities) and much of what we want is so difficult to get that we end up frustrated because we can't obtain them. Most importantly, however, we have very little autonomy when it comes to major decisions in our life. We can hardly control who gets into office based on our measly vote. Likewise, most of us have very little control over the direction our company is going to take, or what type of education our children are going to receive, or what type of clean air or water we can drink, and etc. So modern man increasingly feels frustrated and powerless, which leads to "feeling of inferiority". We are also "over-socialized" into thinking a certain way (see: political correctness) and thus are brainwashed and/or guilt tripped from a very early age into thinking and saying only what the system tells us to. So what can we do about all of this? Kaczynski tries to argue that we can't do anything to reform this system, and thus we have to overthrow it. I think that is a lazy answer to the problem (and a dangerous one) but obviously Kaczynski was a very resentful, violent man.All in all, Kaczynski illuminates some serious issues that we face as moderns living in this type of society, and I guess it is up to us to figure out a way to reclaim our autonomy and sense of fulfillment in an age where such things are quite difficult indeed. This book is a great read and I recommend it to pretty much anyone who is interested in idea's.

...that the brilliance of this man was wasted on terrorism, violence, and death. This book has many foretelling ideas about today (20 years after being written) and out PC culture, censorship, and general absurdities of today. He asserts how we are actually becoming slaves to the technology that we create and which also over-complicates a lot of simple processes of our life (this being something I can attest to as I grew up during the internet's rapid proliferation into everyday life.)He may have been a madman but, he was incredibly intelligent. I can't add too much insight on this because I haven't read the whole thing yet and well...Amazon reviews is hardly an area where insightful scholarly reviews are needed. You can get this for free online on pdf but I like tangible items (like the neo-luddite I am) so I bought it. It's bound appropriately for what it is and quite lengthy for an essay. Read it...its interesting.

Just got done watching the Netflix series Unibomber and was interested in reading the manifesto. This arrived quickly and is a very good book!

Only extreme liberals and conservatives will not agree with this book. The few objective balanced humans left in America will agree. However, you must have a good concrete knowledge of human history, culture, psychosocial behavior, and have read dystopian novels to understand. If not, you're screwed. Stay scrolling for the next camp out date at best buy for the latest apple computer you can't pay in cash. People also need to have an understanding of the genius thinking and inability to function socially. If you are a full grown adult, who owns or has owned a home, pays lots of taxes, has children and pays for their useless crap, saves for their college not-really-an-education, pays $2000 for family medical plan with a deductible of $5000, you don't sleep, you don't vacation, you barely eat, and you can't save for your old age--then you will fully feel and understand this book. BUY IT and don't judge what has been said about this man. The media is the Antichrist that perpetuates hate and ignorance

If you’ve come this far and are reading reviews, just go for it. You’ll enjoy it, and if not, you will have at least challenged your beliefs in some way and are ready to live a better life. Whether that means sticking to your beliefs even harder or questioning them, I don’t know. But you’ll be happy you read this.

Read this book and see how eerily it applies to today.

One of the most insightful essays in modern American literature. If you can plow through the first half, he brings his arguments together intelligently to compose a persuasive argument and discourse on western civilization.

A deep thinker, a revolutionary thinker, a crazy person.Troubling and profound. Will be reading his pre-terrorism works to see if there were any hints that he was slipping down the rabbit hole.
