From Booklist

Kaplan parlayed intelligence, hard work, and creativity into $90,000 of scholarship money, then graduated from Harvard to write a book designed to help others negotiate their way to unencumbered college cash. His guide, self-published in 2000 by Waggle Dancer Press, is now available, totally revised and updated, in this trade paperback edition. Although loosely organized and sometimes repetitive, the book is filled with useful information, beginning with the happy news that merit awards aren't the sole province of gifted athletes and top students. There's also plenty on how scholarships affect college-aid packages, locating and applying for coveted cash, and even handling telephone interviews. Scattered throughout are references to awards and Web sites, including Kaplan's own. Stephanie ZvirinCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

When I saw the title of this book, I began salivating uncontrollably. Imagine, having someone else pay to send your kids to college. That may have been an overreaction. Surely anyone else that has college-bound kids should sympathize. The book is well organized and written on a level that will not challenge a high school student. However, there are tips for a wider audience including the very young, older returning students, graduate students, and students that fit into special groups.Clearly, the competition for scholarships can be intense, but with a logical game plan engaged in consistently, an applicant's effectiveness can be increased. The one consistent theme in the book is that a steady approach will lead to success.I will take issue with a combination of techniques mentioned in the book. Kaplan suggests that students get their recommendations in electronic format so that they can print them out as needed. He also suggests that you solicit "small" changes to recommendation letters to make them "great" letters. I feel this may present many an ethical challenge to some applicants. To be clear, he does not suggest manufacturing recommendation letters. He also provides access to his companion web site to add extra punch to the process. In the final analysis, it is hard to argue with his success, and Kaplan was very successful on his own behalf. He interviewed many of the people involved as applicant and administrators and their tips appear in the book.

Kaplan is very misleading about the actual odds of getting large scholarships. Lets say that the average 600 SAT student has about a one in ten thousand chance in getting a given scholarship. This book will improve that student's odds to about one in eight thousand. You decide if this makes sense. After watching my daughter bust her tail on scholarship applications and seeing the outcome, the one thing anyone needs to know is to go after all the LOCAL scholarships.

We picked this up based on the recommendation of my sister who used this book to help her son find scholarships. While some of the specific scholarships mentioned in the book are no longer available, the strategies and preparation tips are still very valid and useful. There are still scholarships available and the realization that getting several small scholarships really does help defray the cost of attending college by covering books, living expenses, etc.We liked this book so much that we bought two additional copies to donate to our local High School.Recommended!CFH

What I liked most about this book was that it was strategic and offered helpful explanations. The only drawback is that it plugged another book or two of his to get more information that could have easily been supplied by this book. I found the other two books he plugged in the library. But, this book is worth reading and worth easily worth the money (because I bought it used ; )...hey, I'm frugal what can I tell you?)

This book is a scam. It constantly references things available on his "free" website. However, you have to get permission to access the site. I sent numerous requests for permission. It has been over 6 weeks and I have still not been granted access. The only thing I get from trying to register is a message stating I can get reduced access for "only $99".What is most infuriating is that the author discusses how to get more info on his website while also stating to be "cautious" of sites that require payment. Supposedly the author studied Economics at Harvard; one would think he would have learned more sophisticated ways of earning a living.

Being the first person in my immediate and extended family to go to college, I had no one there to pave the way to college for me--I especially had no one to guide me through the entire world of financial aid. I am now going to be a college sophomore in the fall, and I wish more than anything I would have had this book in high school! There is so much information I did not know about the entire world of financial aid that would have come in handy before I ever attended college! Even now, I am learning so much from this book that seem like such simple ideas but that I would have never thought of! This book is incredibly organized and very informative. I am going to recommend it to many of my closest friends. [Not everyone though...I want an edge in winning scholarships! :-)]

no such thing as "free" if you are part of the working poor of the USA. If you pull a paycheck that can support your family, there is no way any of the info, here is for you - means tested grants and loans not for the middle class.

this here book was no help either...not for my child who is already in college I searched and search nothing help for our circumstances sorry
