I have had an interest in the occult for 20 years. I have read several books on Witchcraft and I must admit that I was rather skeptical about this book. I unfortunately believed many of the bad things that I heard about the author. Those who trash this specific book remind me of the elitism that I dealt with in graduate school. Honestly this has been the best book on Witchcraft that I have read. I lament the fact that I did not read it back when it came out. Then again I lament many things that I did around 2003.Ravenwolf never claims that she has all the answers. Yes the book seems to aimed at a younger readership, but that has nothing to do with the quality of the information presented. I don't find Ravenwolf's tone to be condescending either. I highly recommend this book to women and men who are starting a journey into Wicca/Witchcraft. Those with experience in the Craft will also gain much from this tome.
Silver Ravenwolf was the very first author on the subject of witchcraft that I ever read as a child. In fact, almost every witch writer of my generation that I know has had the same experience with her work and holds her in a special place within their hearts. Her writing style is entertaining, witty and quirky. A good occult teacher to me is not someone who can string along a bunch of unnecessarily complex words (often misusing them) which when broken down means very little or absolutely nothing other than an attempt to look psuedo-intellectual and pretentious. A good occult teacher to me is someone who can take complex ideas and concepts, break them down and convey them in an easy to understand manner. This shows that they have mastery in understanding the idea or concept and are more concerned with the student understanding the idea than trying to come off as lofty and wise. Silver Ravenwolf is among these very talented teachers.Solitary Witch: The Ultimate Book of Shadows for the New Generation by Silver Ravenwolf is fantastic for anyone who is new to Witchcraft, Wicca or Neo-Paganism. It provides a strong foundation for any seeker. It’s also a fantastic reference book for anyone who already has a practice. The strength of this Book of Shadows is that it’s aimed at the solitary practitioner, as the name suggests and provides the basics for anyone to have a full personal practice. Scattered among the vast amount of spells, rituals, information and instructions are those gems of deeply inspirational wisdom that Silver scatters within her books if you’re paying attention. For example she writes, “To be a Witch, you must be brave enough to face everything inside of you, and have the courage to change the things you do not like. Being a Witch has nothing to do with spells, rituals, and unusual clothing – they are the fun stuff. To be a Witch is to desire personal transformation.â€Critics will often state that they don’t like her prolific work because they don’t believe or agree with this or that within her books. Absurd! I don’t agree with everything in the book – but I’m not sure if I’ve ever agreed 100% with any book that I’ve read on witchcraft or the occult. You don’t need to believe anything in the book, just soak it up and then give it a try. Witchcraft is about experiencing and knowing what works for you, not blind-belief. This is one of the books that I always recommend to those looking for a solid foundation into the craft, as well as those who want to revisit the foundational basics.
This is not only a bad book for witches and Wicca in general, but an absolutely HORRIBLE book for beginners! I bough this on a recommendation from a friend, but I later found out she was not at all serious or knowledgeable about the craft. Even though I purchased this as a teenager and knew little to nothing about witchcraft or Wicca, I knew this book seemed to be off base. I didn't realize until years later- years in which I studied many good books on the subject, was taught by wise community leaders, and trained under the Majestic tradition- just how horribly off course it really was!For starters, RavenWolf straight up just doesn't know what she is talking about. There are tons of inaccuracies, I have no idea how she could manage that, other than I guess she just makes stuff up off the top of her head.Made up correspondences, wrong names and meanings for runes, statements that are straight up historically inaccurate, incorrect lore- I could go on. Not only that, but there is a tone of bashing Christianity- which has absolutely NO place in a book about Wicca- and having to hide that you're a witch or Wiccan! She even gives advice on how to LIE about it to your parents! Oh and apparently witchcraft and Wicca are the same thing in her eyes, which is absolutely incorrect. Witchcraft goes back centuries, Wicca was created in the 1950s by Gerald Gardner. Also you can be any religion, or no religion, and practice witchcraft. (Just a reminder.)What's worse? She never talks about the Wiccan Rede or ethics of magic. Which for beginner witches is EXTREMELY important. What she does do is spend most of the book giving counseling or "motherly" advice to potentially troubled teens. Instead of delving into important aspects of the craft, she just throws a ton of beginner information (most of it inaccurate) on a ton of subjects into it.Secondly, this does not cover important 101 aspects of the craft. The ones that it covers, it does so very poorly. She tells you what you should/have to do, but does not explain WHY. Which is SO SO important for everything you do! The book is CLEARLY aimed at teenagers, yet the spells all call for all kinds of specific and even expensive ingredients. She never even gives knowledge about how to write your own spells- she apparently just want you to use hers. Also she talks about needing all kinds of tools that one does not need to practice the craft. The only tool you absolutely need is yourself, any good witch knows that.In the end it seems like Silver RavenWolf is diving into the demographic of baby-witch teenagers who don't know that her works aren't reputable, and preys on how difficult being a teenager can be, and how easily they can be manipulated if they don't know any better. Or maybe for the hot-topic goth phase "witches" who really aren't serious about truly learning the ways of the craft.Either way, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. I seriously can hardly believe Llewellyn agreed to publish this. I actually threw my copy away (recycling bin, of course) rather than donate it to a library- because I couldn't stand the thought of someone reading this absolute drivel! It would do more harm than good! Stay FAR away from any of her books!If you want some good Wicca 101 books, start with Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner and Living Wicca: A Further Guide for the Solitary Practitioner (Llewellyn's Practical Magick Series). Start learning to work with energy using Energy Essentials for Witches and Spellcasters . Then go from there.Also, utilize this amazing modern age- go listen to some Pagan Podcasts! I've learned a ton from ones such as Witches BrewHaha, Inciting a Brewhaha, The Wigglian Way, The Crooked Path, and others! Some of them no longer update, but going back and listening to the ones that were released is 100% worth the great knowledge you'll find. And you can listen while on the way to work/school, or while doing chores, working out, whatever!
I’m new to the craft although I’m not a teen. This book has helped me understand in every aspect the nature of everything in my life. There is even a part that helped me with battling acne due to how I cope with stress. I have a few others but this one is by far my favorite. And the book is a lot larger than I expected... Great book Silver!!!!
