If you love palm trees swaying in a slight breeze, and you also like antiques (American or British)....if you LONG for a more "civil" existence, and you want this type of decor as well, you'll REALLY like this. It shows simple lines, non-cluttered victorian, island life. I live in Colorado where it snows up to your keister on a regular basis in the winter. But just to break up all the cold, the mountain cabin feel, and to remind myself of funner things than being snowed in, I went with this decor. If you have these types of items around your home, it gives you a different take on how to decorate, and what you might want to add,(or take away) to enhance this look in your house with what you have already! All I did was rearrange furniture, added a silk palm tree, and a cane woven back chair, and it's pretty close......
The only caveat I have to add to previous reviews is that the book's focus is on furniture and interior settings much more than on architecture. Inasmuch as the Caribbean style is defined by the blending of the indoors and the outdoors, the spectacular photographs in this book also mix views of interior and exterior spaces, but I definitely found furniture and interior objects to be the center of attention.
This is just what I was looking for -- an excellent, colorful selection of colonial British West Indian furniture (memories of my childhood) with a well researched text to accompany it. Terrific photography. I think anyone interested (attention cultural anthropologists) in the lifestyle of wealthy British colonists during this period of time and their mixed-race heirs who subsequently inherited their homes and fortunes would enjoy this extended pictorial narrative.
